Map reduce and filter often are much more readable, but then sometimes a loop is clearer. I often see this when I use resharper's (a c# tool) auto refactor a loop into a linq statement , it can become unreadable.
Some of the NHS health care is shocking. I watched my dad dying on a ward with utterly shit jobs worth nursing staff. After enough of that he ended up in ICU with great care and died. Northern Ireland's NHS is an utter shambles. 3 week wait to see a GP. Surgery wait times of years. It's a crisis. I've got private health cover. Though don't be critical of the NHS, you ll be branded a heretic.
I worked with contractors based in Denver, their salaries were 3 times mine. I don't think cost of living in Denver is insane? Property prices were I am are insane
Also wages in tech in the EU are laughably bad compared to USA. I'm in the UK, same problem. Yet everyone seems to think that a couple weeks more holiday makes up for it.
Why wouldn't you? The number of EU professionals I've worked with here in the uk over the years is surprising to me, they all left their home countries because their prospects where limited by their governments with over zealous interference in business. Living in a business friendly country has obvious benefits: jobs and money
I think the whole western world has been fed a pile of anti American garbage for a generation. My wife actually said she wouldn't live there because she was afraid of getting shot. Ridiculous. Meanwhile everyone in the non western world wants to get to the USA. I'm in the UK and I'm now glad we have left the EU. The vaccine debacle has maybe shown us what the eu actually is: a massive bureaucracy where no one takes any responsibility for failings. (I voted to remain, I shouldn't have)
I'm 37, I'm starting to get worried about my age being a problem. But to hell with blaming employers who don't want me, it's their call. I think that maybe the actual problem is that by 40 they expect that I should be leading teams not just stuck at senior dev. Personally I want out of tech as I see supply and demand acting on wages (I'm in UK). Pretty soon, as far as I can estimate, it will go the way manufacturing went in the west: gone or heavily unionised blue collar like Germany which I don't want to be.
Yes but it did go into decline for a while until it reinvented itself. It's lost its dominance in OSs and web browsers. Government intervention didn't cause that, free markets did.
I couldn't agree more. It's a toxic mentality, it allows people to just say successful / rich people must have ripped someone off or just been really lucky. Dealing with fear of failure has turned into my biggest obstacle in life.
On the programming front, I ve worked as a programmer for 12 years. I consider myself as not smart at all. I worked hard at learning my trade. I'd suggest you take things really slowly, some things you are going to have to rote learn.
I've only browsed it, but it looks like the best way to get started to me.
My brother worked through https://learncodethehardway.org python book, he liked that. I used the learn c the hard way and I like the guy's teaching style. He makes it clear that this stuff can be hard and you need to take your time.
I was constantly overwhelmed by programming, but I just kept going. I'm now at the point where I realise coding isn't the hardest part of the job anymore.
Uk programmer here, late 30s, in the last year or so I've woken up to the fact that we re getting terribly salaries in the uk. Reddit is full of naive europeans who seem to be brainwashed into thinking the USA is some racist hell hole and that "cost of living is cheaper in Europe" (as far as I can tell this is complete nonsense). Or that paying high taxes will give them a good pension (not in the UK).
As I live in Scotland I pay 40 percent tax on everything I earn over 41 thousand pounds.
I take it you went to the States ? Is it even possible for someone my age to get there to work?
I'm not anti Tory, but the crap with the "internet levy" that will be required to police "harmful content" doesn't really send signals to the rest of the world that the UK is a forward thinking future tech hub.
