Because the Windows 8 UI is so bad that even consumers won't accept it.
Hidden UI = no UI at all. This peek-a-boo shit has to stop.
And "converging" mobile and desktop OSes is exactly backward. What the ascendancy of tablets has shown us is that many people don't need computers. So when someone DOES take the trouble to fire up a computer, it stands to reason that he needs A COMPUTER. That means a real OS, file system, pointing device, and other affordances that provide the precision and power needed for computer-based tasks.
That doesn't hold water. How grossly incompetent would the engineering have to be if the machine can't tell the difference between being moved a few hundred feet vs. out of the country? If the vendor knows the original ("approved") location of the machine, it can figure out where the nearest border of an embargoed country is.
"Lightning-plug guru"? Is that supposed to be impressive?
It's just the opposite. The Lightning plug is a sorry piece of shit, and a step backward from even the hacked, overextended 30-pin connector. No one with common sense would REMOVE the audio line out from an entire line of devices that focus heavily on media playback. WTF? Now that even cheap rental cars have auxiliary audio jacks, Apple decides to REMOVE the line out from the dock connector?
And no one with common sense would DEGRADE the video output by recompressing it into a mottled hash of artifacts. But that's what Apple has done with the vaunted Lightning connector. Read about it: http://www.panic.com/blog/the-lightning-digital-av-adapter-s...
Google should never be allowed to name or brand anything. "SPDY", which doesn't stand for anything, is just another failure from this factory of asinine names.
Sadly it's just another Band-Aid. Until the government has the balls to step up and illegalize software patents and "business-method" patents altogether, any patent "reform" is a sham.
Until that's done, patent "reform" is a sham.
