In my humble opinion, more often than not, when a techie refers to another commenter as an "asshole" they simply mean that they dislike the other commenter's politics or lack of left-leaning political correctness. You see, most techies espouse leftist views, which are rarely challenged in public because most media lean left. When they come across real-world opinions held by a large percentage of the population, they flip out and call the offender(s) "jerks, bozos and assholes."
I'm on the other side. I see the entire original post and most of the related comments on HN as examples of intolerance of truly diverse opinions. Those who would flag-kill differing opinions are the "assholes". Those incapable of seeing their own bias are likely "bozos" or "jerks". In short, several of the self-congratulatory commenters on HN fail to understand that the words "asshole", " jerk", "bozo" apply squarely to them.
I had a recent post which got 5 quick upvotes then was flag-killed for failing to hew to feminist orthodoxy and the feminine imperative. That's how intolerance is done.
> Did you read the article? Men in China institute the vast majority of divorces,
Yes, I read the article and nowhere does it state that men institute the vast majority of divorces.
The article does provide some numbers: the base fee for disrupting a mistress is around $45000. This is not an article about poor, destitute women.
> contrast, men in the US get custody as much as women when they pursue it.
The key phrase here is "when they pursue it", which, as you are probably aware, is not very often because any decent lawyer will advise the man not waste tens of thousands of dollars on an almost certain failure. That's why women get custody over 90% of the time.
The article refers to costly divorces without explaining how a divorce that costs less than $10 to file by filling out a few forms can be costly.
I have provided numbers but you take issue not with my numbers but the fact that I have raised awareness of a mirror image scourge that has for several decades destroyed more lives in the West, where most on HN reside, than this nascent problem in China. Log/mote, eye, hypocrisy, etc.
> The divorce rate in the USA is nowhere near that high. It peaked at around 60% in the 80s and has fallen to below 50% since then.
I should have stated that better. Historically, in America, from the late 19th Century until the present, women have filed the majority of divorces; approximately two thirds, regardless of prevalent economic circumstances.
>Also, after marriage, Chinese woman will not focus mostly on work or career promotion but rather on family, so in the long term, they are 1) financially attached to the husband 2) emotionally attached to the husband. This makes them want to "fix" the marriage rather than abandon it, even if the fix is superficial and (maybe) temporary.
This was the reason for community property laws in the West. But now that women work outside the home and earn almost as much as men, community property has morphed into a divorce theft regime in which the wife can take 60% to 100% of everything the man holds dear including his children, his income, the house, and his retirement income and assets, all as (often lifetime) alimony and upwardly variable child support, all under the persistent threat of imprisonment even if he has done nothing to deserve such abuse.
Please note that, in China, the national divorce rate is approximately 2% but in first-tier cities, where women have the highest earning potential, it's over 47%. If women in China file for divorce at similar rates as they have in the U.S. for over 100 years, they they will be filing 65% to 70% of divorces.
Divorce is easy in China, for both women and men. The government policy is equality of the sexes--women hold up half the sky. And divorce rates are highest in cities where women have the greatest agency and highest economic independence.
So, in China divorcees cannot seize their ex husband's premarital assets (govt policy) often leaving them destitute through no fault of theirs. In Anglo Saxon countries, millions fathers are not allowed to see let alone raise their children. Both are sad situations but which is worse?
BTW, anyone contemplating marriage in America might want to watch the movie 'Divorce Corp' first.
Looks like incivility to me.
