Ask HN: How can a C++ SDE transition to a full stack position?

I held a C++ developer position at a big co until recently. Because work was unfulfilling, I kept working after work on some web app projects using React, Nodejs, Django, GraphQL etc. (nothing is publishable at this point in time though). I find full stack development to be a lot more suitable to my style (I'm a generalist) and enjoyable.

Realistically, how can somebody like me be considered for a full stack position? If I have to have a portfolio, what would be a respectable project that would help me sell myself well?

Some companies require a portfolio. Some require experience with the coolest, newest version of toolX. But also some of them will just value a solid engineer that is already teaching themselves knowledge they would need. The trick is to find that last type of company. Usually it's companies that don't need to sell their own services/people constantly.

Best way is to increase your visibility by building portfolio of your work. Build personal projects around various full stack technologies. It will put you way ahead in competition. Nothing impresses recruiter more than some live projects under the belt.

Just apply for some positions, if you can discuss relevant technologies, you have experience in a dev position I'd say you have a reasonable chance as is.
