Tried it in the Philippines and it works well. One possible problem here is that for smartphones, users may be charged unexpectedly because background apps that access the net. There should be a separate APN for Free Zone use so users are sure they are not charged for normal data rates. I don't think users will use this if they are uncertain that it is totally free.
I actually stopped using Pocket (phone/tablet) and just use Send to Kindle for everything. It doesn't bother me too much that I can't archive/mark as read articles, I just delete them from my kindle once I'm done. Also I just order the articles by most recent and just use search if I need to find a specific article. I wanted to avoid relying on hacks so I guess this setup will be stable for a while.
It's actually amusing that since back then I've used ipod touch, android phone, android tablet, and now the kindle, for specifically reading articles from the web.
When I was in college I was actually printing web articles in batch during weekends, I just paste the plain text to MS word arranged in 3 columns in uniform font so it looks like a newspaper. Those were fun times since everything was so new to me :) that's way before all the instapaper/pocket came out.
A dual mode display would be nice too. Something that could switch to e-ink mode when reading articles or when it is on standby. That way we don't have to wait for e-ink displays to have fast enough refresh rates.
I'd love an e-ink android tablet too. Reading on an LCD tablet is painful especially if you are already staring at a computer all day. I almost decided to buy the Nook Glow because I've seen it installed with android 2.1 but it seems most apps are incompatible, so I went with Kindle Paperwhite which does web articles pretty fine with it's Send to Kindle feature.
Btw there's a chrome extension of Send to Kindle so you don't have to email articles. Also if you like reading Hacker News on the kindle browser check out http://bit.ly/hnkindle :)

the only problem i have reading on the ipod touch is my arm kinda gets tired quickly because of the weight (and its awkward to hold it with 2 hands when reading). if only the zune hd had a similar app to instapaper i'm sure it's the next thing i would buy.
CakePHP for me too. I also use Zend Framework. I like both. CakePHP is great for it's simplicity, but if their conventions don't work for you try out Zend Framework.
One of my projects use it (http://eatmycharts.com).. I'd say it removed the registration barrier, but that's about it. People will come back for the service.
I can't track which users publish to their mini feed (is there a way to tell? you ask the user's permission and there's no javascript callback to know if the user approved on publishing). Most of my users that are in my facebook network prefer not to publish to their mini feed.
I myself don't like to use my Facebook account on other websites (unless I really want to use my identity on purpose). That's why on my website, I automatically assign a nick to the user (which they can change), so their full name won't appear on public.
Overall, I don't think FC helped a lot in my case.
It eases the registration. You can also publish your votes to Facebook, which some people may like (like being a fan to an artist). On the part of making money, there's the usual ads, and I'm planning to sell mp3's from Amazon.

I was also debating with myself on that before, but I decided that going with songs/singles will make the charts move faster (people will be encouraged to vote more often). Also often when I want to try out new music, I just like to hear 1 song from the artist (preferably the best song on the album)-- if I like it then I try the whole album. The browser part is good, I need to add that.
a simple iphone book/html reader that downloads my latest bookmarks on delicious tagged 'read' so I could read them offline.
This way I don't have to sync and stuff ;) does instapaper already do this? I tried it once before.. I forgot the reason why I got back to ruBooks and a custom python script to download websites from my delicious feed.
It's not 100% accurate, but it's close. The reason I did the website is so I can catch up with the good stories that were submitted earlier during the week (I usually read during weekends).
