Only is not AI. It's LLM, diffusion models and what have you. The term AI became so overloaded that it means almost nothing these days. AGI is still hard to reach for, but it doesn't stop all kinds of spin artists from trying.

It says "Leveraging the trace amounts of moisture in air, the broken-down PET is converted into monomers—the crucial building blocks for plastics. From there, the researchers envision the monomers could be recycled into new PET products or other, more valuable materials." I don't know if there's some enormous challenge hiding behind the word "envision", but I'm assuming it's a closed system until something useful comes out of the other end. The method just can't be a lot more expensive than to make the same thing/material from scratch or it's never going to gain traction.
I would not write this.off as hysteria. It's important to consider motivation of potential actors. Every advanced rocket guidance system uses cameras to zero in on its targets during the final approach. You can't rely on GPS at that point. To do a good job you need to know what your target looks like and high resolution drone imagery helps a lot.
Thank you for putting this together. For a certain generation this resonates strongly. For me in the mid to late 90's getting into coding and hacking assembly while listening to and coding underground music in trackers were huge influences that have had their impact on the trajectory of my life and my social circle.
It seems like a lot, but a few billions of dollars also seems like a good deal to secure against increasing risks for severe weather. What's the total economic impact of future storms? To put it in perspective a single Patriot missile battery costs about a billion dollars and a single missile costs $4M.
I don't think the difference between the power grid and the power utility is clear to most people. The grid is a statewide wholesale electricity distribution network which consists of generators, substations and high voltage long distance transmission lines. The utility is in charge of taking the power from the grid and delivering 110/220V to end customers, i.e. homes and businesses. This hurricane caused a lot of damage to the utility infrastructure. The grid performed fine.
Some people bring up the storm Ian in 2021. Winter storms are fundamentally different disasters. Cold snaps drive up local electricity demand sharply and this is the kind of thing that can stress the grid.
Anything truly valuable is of course classified. This is to reveal no new information while showing something to the taxpayer about what billions are spent on. It's a delicate and awkward dance.
This is a bit contrived to illustrate a problematic case. Every business has a unique ID that's assigned to it before it can operate. EIN or even a state id together with state would be a fine natural key for most situations.
I see both sides of this, but I think I would side with the original comment. It's not just blind outrage or something like that. The point is that there ought to be impact on Ticketmaster business. The messed up and there should be a cost to the company. They should be paying big fines or compensating their users. It should be entirely possible for a company to go bankrupt in such a situation which would incentivise better internal practices.
I live in Marin and police in my small town frequently arrest criminals using automatic license plate scanners that guard every road that leads into town. Most of them drive from SF over the bridge after committing various crimes. Our town is a very safe town. I feel safe leaving the front door unlocked or keys inside the car in the driveway. Unfortunately everything changes as soon as I cross the bridge.
So the question is this: if your house got robbed and/or you family got hurt, wouldn't you want technology to be on your side?
If I read that correctly, in the second case someone can bypass the pinning feature to access your personal information via the default browser's active sessions. That would be a compromise if that's the case.
