I've largely abandoned macOS for Linux when it comes to work stuff, but I still have a Windows desktop for games. That said, I've been very impressed by my Steam Deck. Windows 10 will probably be the last version of Windows for me.

Amusing - The statistics from your Department for Transport seem to suggest that you are either an extreme outlier or just entirely wrong[1]! Or maybe this can be attributed to you having some lingering difficulties with kph vs mph?

Assuming SPE0111 is what I should be looking at, UK motorway speeds seem very similar to what I've experienced on US interstates.

Pushshift.io is pretty close to what you were talking about for Reddit comments; they make their archive available periodically at http://files.pushshift.io/reddit/

IIRC Pushshift is what powers sites like https://removeddit.com/

As a software developer, the thing I love about the cubesat concept is the presumably reduced iteration time. The idea of waiting for years only to find out something went wrong once the satellite is in orbit seems absurd (sorry, GOES-17).

That said, isn't the whole concept of cubesats tied to the idea that they're not in a geostationary orbit? There's something to be said for the simplicity of "point at this spot in your section of sky and receive data".

I suppose now is a good time for me to look into how to get data from a cubesat fleet.

I've been exclusively using Linux (Antergos) on the XPS 15 since mid-February. Installing was remarkably easy, though I haven't had time to mess with the fingerprint reader or GPU switching due to work.

My only complaint is that the glossy screen somehow seems more reflective than my Macbook Pro and iMac--and FWIW I'm typing this with all three machines on my desk right now. However, I'm not too bothered by it. IIRC the 1080p configuration of the 9560 is matte.

You might enjoy Stephen Baxter's "Xeelee" books. I started with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacuum_Diagrams and enjoyed it, but could see its various stories coming across as too jumbled up and disconnected for some.

I'll punt as to the accuracy of your "moralizing America" sneer, but remember that Disney chose their mascot--not the American public.

Additionally, my understanding is that Donald Duck had at least a few American fans. Though their numbers are probably limited to the few Americans who enjoy Looney Tunes, Homer Simpson, and the stereotypical sitcom dad (among other characters).

Agreed. For the last two years or so I've found myself weighting text-heavy websites like HN, or Reddit much more positively.

What I find disconcerting is that this shorthand seems entirely about ornamentation--the worry is that maybe some future TimeCube-like site will be subtle enough that it won't trigger my "is the author a kook" filter.

This sounds like a great idea, and I can't help but think of this as a very "Valley" take on Renaissance-style patronage.

You might find http://realearth.ssec.wisc.edu/ useful. Just be sure to click on either the "Presets" or "All" tabs within the "Layers" section.

Oh, and if you decide to use the animation feature just try to be patient with the way it loads in the individual times--once you've pulled down everything the animation should look a good bit nicer.

That's a pretty interesting way to think of it. The only other platforms (AFAIK) that come close would be the JVM and Mono/CLR.

But the browser is more like a user-facing, interactive JVM/etc.

For whatever reason, the following snippet prompted me to see who the author was:

  Amid the hundreds of congratulatory messages I received,   
  one stuck out: “Were you a bully at school?”

As it turns out, the author is Jon Ronson. He's well worth checking out. I've particularly enjoyed The Men Who Stare at Goats (the book), The Secret Rulers of the World, and The Psychopath Test.
