Google still hasn't figured out that part of the premium for Apple users is being able to walk in to an Apple store in most major metro areas for assistance...meanwhile Google still thinks message boards and third-party repair constitute a premium experience

let me restate: if there is a disaster and you are well-supplied with emergency provisions, in America you should expect to protect yourself, your family, and your provisions. in other nations it may be different, here people possess guns, and they aren't all nice

it sounds like you are already following this mindset so there is no dispute. the way I originally made my point was poorly worded.
in California there is a public service campaign that tells people to be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours...which also means by implication you should expect 911 doesn't work for 72 hours
you presume I have some desire to use my gun or create a situation to use my gun. No. It is an insurance policy. Like all policies, it can also fail, but I would rather have it than not.

Obviously the people who tout their gun ownership are just asking for trouble...most notably they are just begging to have their guns stolen.

Still, you cannot separate emergency preparedness and self-protection. Anyone who questions this should look back at Hurricane Katrina or the LA riots.

Sounds trollish but my point is that Californians in particular eventually need to square this neo-survivalism with their long-standing desire to create a gun-free society.
You should not assume friendly cooperation in a crisis. You should assume people will do what they have to do or have always wanted to do.
The Bay Area in particular is deeply polarized and we should assume the worst if law enforcement is temporarily absent
