Not defending fraud (in general or in this specific case), but who it being ruined for?

Amazon is still making fabulous amounts of money, prices are still low there, and the policy is still generous to the customer.

Absolutely. I think one of the fun things about that calculator is that you can mess around with the numbers to try different situations. Perhaps there's a way to account for that tax (e.g. by using ~5.8% returns as the after-tax rate).

No, that's editorializing based on the few differentiating factors I found.

Though I think the idea that the more expensive model is pushed by dealers makes sense too.

To give an example, the Subaru Crosstrek is a lifted Subaru Impreza hatchback. They share nearly all parts, and have the same interior and cargo space. The differences are:

1. Crosstrek costs more ($22,145 vs $18,695)

2. Crosstrek is less efficient (33/27 mpg vs 36/28 mpg)

3. Crosstrek is taller (64" vs 59")

4. Crosstrek outsells the Impreza in the US (131k vs 66k)

Americans love feeling tall and are willing to pay for the extra few inches.

We did this at a previous company in the healthcare space. It made audits easy since we could point to every instance of the design changing, who approved it, and the code that implements the change (all wrapped up in PR(s)).

In general I like checking docs into source control, for all the reasons we use git and code reviews for the code itself.

I believe you can add a delay for what the viewers see, which would give you some time to cut the stream in case any secrets are shown.

Else, it's good practice for a secret rotation process :)

Also as someone without formal CS education: I'm surprised too, though not alarmed. I've very rarely felt like I didn't have the right education to do my job at giantmegacorp w/ CS PhD coworkers.

The bigger problem is that I feel a bit of a cultural outsider. There are jokes, stories, language that coworkers use and I'm just not familiar with. That can promote impostor syndrome and definitely affects interviews (eg "cultural fit").

Doing some calculations from another direction:

The maximum daily energy density of sunlight in sunny Los Angeles is about 6.4 kWh / m2 [1] (assuming perfect, moving angle of panels to sun).

If we can turn the entire footprint of a Model X into solar panels, that gives us about 10 m2 (big car!).

The US DoE reports the Model X gets 100 mi / 31 kWh [2]. Or 12.4 kWh for 40 mi.

So those panels would need to get 1.2 kWh / m2 of solar power. Which is about 18% efficiency and pretty reasonable for good consumer panels [3].

But it assumes the car is in sunlight all day at the perfect angle, there is no loss (eg due to weight), in a locale as sunny as LA (eg Seattle gets half of the sunlight as LA), and can be completely coated in efficient panels (the model S solar roof is <1 m2 in comparison). Bumping efficiency to 30% gives some headroom but it still seems pretty impractical.

Isn't that the general startup success story: small scrappy team adapts faster to changes and the market, giving them some advantage over slow-moving megacorp?

Grubhub is a good backup service in that case. I call first, then put in an order online if calling failed (which happens very rarely for me).

Plus a lot of places are a little cheaper if you call.

I don't think anyone seriously wants to replace every single family home with something more dense (even if the rhetoric indicates so). It's harmful and unnecessary. E.g.:

* There is an estimated 3-4 million housing unit deficit in CA, on 14 million total units (US Census). We'll take 4 million units to err on the extreme case.

* CA currently has 7 million single-family homes (US Census)

* Assuming 100% of that deficit is made from replacing a single family home with a quadplex, it would take 1.3 million single homes -> quadplexes to make up the 4 million unit deficit.

Even in that most extreme case, I can't imagine one quadplex per block would affect green areas or the totally legitimate choice to live a single family home.

In reality, I think most YIMBY advocates want mixed-use medium density, which requires an order of magnitude fewer buildings.

Local HOAs and similar have loud voices against these kind of projects. It might take another big voice (like Sidewalk Labs) to counter.

I've tried calling my local reps to support walkable community projects and have been told, nearly verbatim, that if the HOA doesn't like it, they won't be voting for it. Then when big tech offices started moving in, the redevelopment projects finally started too.

1.5 years is already very fast for a clinical trial. The average duration of clinical trials for "breakthrough" drugs is 5.0 years [1], compared to 8.0 years for drugs without that status. Plus O(1%) of trials actually make it to approval [2].

That's such an interesting comparison that I relate with. If availability and startup time are good enough, I'd be happy to use a shared resources for both CPU and cars.

Just did some napkin math and the potential gas savings number seems reasonable. (I expected it to be inflated and still think it's a dark pattern to include it.)

  Model 3:
  (50 kwh battery)
  * (0.166 $/kwh for Los Angeles residential power)
  / (220 mi range)
  = 3.8 $/100 mi of fuel
  
  Average ICE sedan:
  (3.00 $/gal average regular gas in LA)
  /(30 mi/gal)
  = 10 $/100 mi of fuel

If you drive 12000 mi in a year, it comes to about $4.5k in savings over 6 years. That drops a ton if you would have purchased a Prius or other hybrid though, and to zero w/ cheap Texas gas.

So it's a reasonable number if you're a Californian who would have bought a BMW instead of a Model 3. For everyone else, it's likely too high.

Any compliant healthcare software project would keep a junior developer very far from the patient -- there are many layers of review, testing and validation that would prevent one developer's mistakes from significantly putting patient health or data at risk. Even senior developers (usually) shouldn't be able to touch stuff that close to patients.

A doctor literally has their hands on a patient. There isn't a review pipeline that makes sure a doctor's mistakes are caught before they reach a patient.

(That's not to say mistakes that harm patients don't happen in healthcare software, just that it's hard for one developer to cause harm without many others approving it first)

What were you looking to get out of a Sonos? If you just want something that can play music wirelessly from various devices, I'd recommend getting a pair of bookshelf speakers and plugging them into one of (Airport Express, Chromecast Audio, Raspberry Pi[1]). You won't be locked into Sonos and generally bookshelf speakers sound better than all-in-one units. I'd love to recommend some speakers if you're interested (e.g. [2]).

I have run a few Airport Expresses for the past 10 years and love them. Older models are cheap (<$30) and still work great.
