For a small company it matters, but for a FAANG interview the person rescheduling your interview is completely disconnected from the people making the hiring decision so it would literally not make a difference.

I've taken to calling this phenomenon (for a lack of a better word) "Popaganda" -- beliefs that are spread and mutually reinforced throughout popular media and the general population. If something seems believable, it makes its way into popular media and is therefore made more believable in an endless feedback loop, regardless of how inaccurate it is and regardless of how damaging it is for society to believe such a falsehood. The reason for singling these concepts out, and lumping it together with something as insidious as propaganda is that, similar to propaganda, once someone believes one of these concepts and sees it repeated around them so many times, it is almost impossible to convince them otherwise.

Some examples, both specific and general:

  * Smart people always immediately know solutions to problems and are  100% confident about these solutions
  * If someone's heart stops beating, just use a defibrillator
  * Hacking is an active activity
  * Modern medicine is "white box" -- just scan your body, see the problem and get meds that fix it
  * "Someone" (a government, a company, an evil mastermind etc.) is always in control of any given situation involving a large number of people, regardless of how chaotic the situation is and how many stakeholders are involved

(not a great list, but you get the idea)

This is interesting, but I feel like it isn't as thorough as I would like. Men and women speak differently in ways that can't be masked by voice modulation and I suspect that phrasing, choice of vocabulary, intonation etc. also play a role in how people are perceived. My hypothesis would be that men are more familiar with how men speak, so if a woman also spoke like that, they would see an improvement. I'm not saying my prediction would definitely be correct, but I think it is an obvious one to consider and this post didn't attempt to address it.

I agree and I think this is why OP said to be careful -- there are so many engineers out there who do not separate the ideas of code and functionality. When these people write unit tests, they are essentially just checking that the unit behaves exactly as it currently does (white-box style), instead of checking that the unit behaves as desired (black-box style). Every subsequent change to the codebase requires a corresponding change to the tests, even if the external behavior of the unit remains the same.

I think most people would agree with your reasoning here, but there is a difference between a country voluntarily gifting their artifacts / artwork to other countries as opposed to other countries obtaining them through morally questionable means and then claiming it's better to keep things that way.

Just to totally nitpick your last point, it's worth noting that the BART cost probably includes the entire infrastructure maintenance cost whereas Uber essentially has infrastructure subsidized (i.e., they don't need to pay for maintenance of the roads their cars drive on etc.) so a true comparison of efficiency would result in Uber "costing" more than that.

It's worth noting that most Australian mortgages use variable (i.e., non-fixed) interest rates, so when rates go up, everyone's payment increases. High interest rates in the US are beneficial to mortgage holders because most people use fixed-rate loans which means as inflation increases, your monthly payment decreases in real value.
