Unrelated to the license plates, but the war is remembered differently in Canada, in Britain, and by historians. I think Wikipedia has it right calling the war "indecisive". In Canada, the war is remembered as the time we trounced the Yankees and burned the White House. The Brits don't think much of the war at all. Historians say its much more complicated of course, but the key facts to remember are (despite what the Canadians say) the troops that burned the White House were British regulars, not Canadian militia, and that the militia was highly unreliable and had significant levels of desertions (despite the national pride now). It's also good to keep in mind that Britain was in the midst of a total war with Napoleonic France and that the Americas were a sideshow. The US distinguished itself early with the frigate battles, like the Constitution vs Java, but then there was the Shannon vs Chesapeake.

You'd need to write a script yourself for this. The general ledger generally doesn't include enough information about all of your assets, expected end of useful life, serials, etc. It's pretty common for accounting software packages to track this stuff and calculate depreciation, but like you're guessing its a separate process.

I was an accountant in a former life, and this is a question that most companies end up solving with their accounting software. Last time I looked into ledger or hledger it didn't include this stuff (or I didn't notice that it did).

Just like the rest of economics, the efficient market hypothesis is a nice model without any basis in reality. The fact that speculative bubbles exist should be enouh to disprove it.

No One at my firm has had success either. I’m guessing they were overwhelmed by responses. It’s possible that they’ve gotten millions.

More importantly, there are really only five major banks in Canada - RBC, TD, Scotiabank, BMO and CIBC. National Bank is a close #6, but is really only big in Quebec. Those five are the lion's share of the banking industry, especially when you consider that they own a number of the other banks (Scotiabank owns Tangerine, for example). The other banks are niche regional banks or for specific purposes (i.e. Home Bank business is largely selling GICs and lending mortgages, without much else).

I was speaking recently to a graphic artist who is terrified of Stable Diffusion and the like. I mentioned that these tools can augment their ability to do work instead of just replacing, but their point is that they are a graphic artist because they like doing the things that the AI will be replacing. Being a prompt engineer wasn't really the reason they studied and learned to become an artist. To me, that is a completely reasonable way to feel.

I agree with most of this, except that I'm even more bullish on the Steam Deck. My wife has never been much of a gamer, but bought a Steam Deck. Now she can play her cozy games in a way she never could before. It's not great for AAA gaming but its accessible in ways that only Nintendo's consoles have been in the past.

Nintendo has such a great, family friendly brand. If I was in charge, I wouldn't want my brand to be anywhere close to being associated to this type of thing.

Evidence shows that there is a negative correlation between transmission and virulence, where the more virulent a virus is the less it spreads. I believe this is at least partially due to the fact that if it kills the host, it can't spread as far as if the host lives and keeps spreading. However, I believe that correlation is over the long run, and that there is plenty of evidence towards diseases that both spread easily and are deadly in the short run (smallpox, cholera, etc). Selection pressures seem to push viruses to be less deadly over time, but that's just it: over time.

Cholera is an interesting example of this because it relied on the fecal transmission route, where it would easily spread through tainted water. It didn't matter all that much if the hosts died, as long as it got into the water supply.

I am a CPA (former auditor!) who is now a developer, working as a consultant for two firms. I'm looking for part time work. One of the projects I'm involved with now is winding down and I will have about 10 hours a week open starting soon.

I'm interested in how businesses work and how they scale, through modeling processes and the flow of information. A lot of companies run into problems with these type of things, where the 'bureaucratic problem' takes over where there are too many people who can say no and stop something from happening. On the other side, there are firms where there is no structure that just creates chaos. I try to thread the line between the two and help build processes that preserve innovation without falling into the morass.

Right now my main role is working at a large finance company in change management. I'm helping transform business processes with code, and sitting between the accounting department and developers to try and move things in a sensible direction, as well as implementing systems. I'm part management manager part business analyst.

I'm looking to get involved somewhere where my skills might be of use. I am adept now at python, and I've built some internal tools, such as a library for automating financial reporting, some basic CRUD web interfaces for managing data, I built a REST API to serve up some finance data for the rest of the firm, etc.

Here's the sort of things I might be able to help out with:

- I can speak both the business language and the tech language. I can help manage and lead projects while understanding the tech side of things

- Consult on accounting based products. Think of me as a project manager who really understands the domain

- Advise on improving your operations, information flow, processes, internal controls, etc.

- Typical accounting work, like month end closes, financial statements, bookkeeping, analysis, etc. (The advantage here for me would be that I'd like to automate as much as possible, where the typical accountant might not have the skills for that)

- Help put business processes and logic into code

- Make business problems go away (compliance, tax, paperwork type stuff, etc)

- Liason with external accountants, tax people, etc

Yes! I've read and reread them many, many times. There's nothing more comforting to me than picking up one of those books. I've never actually finished the series, I don't think I'll ever be read for the ending.

Oh agreed, 100%. I was trying to summarize Strauss's point in the book. But really, you've hit on the Straussian interpretation of Strauss!

Leo Strauss wrote "Persecution and the Art of Writing" where he argued, among other things, that many ancient and early-modern writers would hide their true beliefs in their works underneath all of the publicly acceptable stuff. This has implications for how we read those texts now: if you're reading a summary, did the summarizer pick up on the esoteric meanings? Did the translator? If we stick to what was said in the text, we're missing what the writer really said. If Hume retracted essays, the Straussian reading of this would be that that's what he probably truly believed, or at least closer to that. Is this something the HN might care about? Not sure, but that's some of the implied context here.

Just a gut feeling, but Exxon has way more skin in the game than NASA does from a financial point of view since this is an existential threat to their business. That being said, we've always all had skin in the game, we just didn't realize it.

I agree with everything you're saying especially from the individual's perspective, but I think its valuable to look at the incentives from Salesforce's perspective.

They paid an incredible amount of money for Slack because of what Slack is. In my opinion, it doesn't really matter that Slack ceased to exist (which I agree de jure it did) because de facto the Slack culture still exists as a minority now. If anything, the incentives at Salesforce should be to preserve Slack, not whittle it down, because they thought Slack was worth billions of dollars. Is Slack's technology really worth that much? Maybe, maybe not. Is Slack's customer base worth that much and do they have a big enough moat that they won't start evaporating? Maybe, maybe not. More likely the value at Slack was created by the sum of its parts together, including culture.

Maybe you can make the argument that Salesforce thinks they bought a company that was worth less than the sum of its parts and that they can unlock value by making changes, but the acquisition and "culture clash" imply to me a big corporation throwing money at something they don't really understand.

I think there is still a place for books, but the age of the 200 or 300 page business/productivity porn book is over. I've often felt like they were a few pages of useful content, then 200 pages of filler so the book stands out on the shelves in a book store. I don't think there is a lot of value lost there. I use Blinkist now for a lot of those type of books, so the future is already here in many ways.
