Looks good - although is this also missing declined transactions ? We see a very high percentage of failed transactions each month, however this could be because 80% of our customers are in my he US but our merchant account is in the UK ?
This could be very interesting if the 10 second timescale could be increased - as it stands 10 seconds is not enough time to do anything meaningful other than potentially crawl under your desk.
I know little of the science behind earthquakes and the movement of tectonic plates, however it would seem that if 10 seconds warning is possible today then further longer periods of time in the future could help people and or the technology surrounding building's and the infrastructure within the building to ready themselves/itself for the onset of an earthquake.
The biggest problem I see here is that if all cars on the road were self driving then you have more control. The issue is when you mix human behaviour and error into the mix. The first fatal or near fatal accident with self driving cars could be the end before it's even started.
It's understandable that Apple locks down private API's, however given that developed these often they move from the private state (beta testing for their own apps?) to public and available for developers to develop against once they are happy with them.
Full disclosure I am one of the brother's of the guys involved in this project ! This to me now typifies Hacker News and this is very very sad. Hacker News of which I have been a member for a number of years has always been a great place to go where you get good actionable comments and discussion on topics. This thread however is typical of the 'new' Hacker News, a place where users want to snipe at other users and find negative aspects to things submitted. BusterKeaton has gone to the extent of creating a throwaway Hacker News profile to point out disparities in an interesting project that had no ulterior motive - just an idea that stemmed from a book that may also apply to a website. Why pick it apart to try to find something wrong with it ? Why then try to discredit one of the founders with threats about his current employer ? Hacker News was always a place where like minded people could gather to discuss and showcase interesting projects, often for people who are employed outside of these projects and who are trying to better their lives with interesting and thought provoking projects. Hacker News now unfortunately is a place where some of it's users are trying to discredit and prove a point. This is a very sad day and has forever tainted my view of Hacker News and reinforces my view that Hacker News is certainly not the place it once was and albeit there a lot of great users with interesting commentary and interesting projects to showcase there are a lot of individuals who want to prove a point, belittle others and generally snipe.
It is a little bizarre - I find your posts incredibly useful for the mobile space - so why this would get downvoted (if that's the reason) is beyond me.
I agree - given that Google has now acquired Like.com and they would be (very) unlikely to bring any lawsuit, why can't the company just re-launch - even if they have to bootstrap ?
My data points for a UK centric app in the sports section of the app store (iPhone & iPad combined) :
#25 = ~ 20 sales/day
#15 = ~ 30 sales/day
#5 = ~ 50 sales/day
#3 = ~ 75 sales/day
So wildly different to US in terms of numbers - which is probably in itself unsurprising but great to see some actual numbers.
One thing I have noticed is that sales in general in the UK have gone up quite dramatically since Christmas - before Christmas we were in the top 10 of the Sports section of the UK app store and seeing around 20 - 25 sales a day - now you would be likely to see around 40 sales a day.
I founded a startup with my brother 5 years ago - we launched in my two weeks paternity leave from work. For the first 4 years we both held down full time jobs and worked on our startup every evening. I had my 2nd child when the startup turned 4 any my brother had his first around the same time. I'm not sure if it's because we are family, but we've always had a policy (not written down or set in stone) but that if one of us wants some time off then we do.
We pretty much do normal hours (10 - 6), we still work a few evenings, but we're now both full time so haven't got the added stress of a 'day job'. It was always our dream to be able to work full time on our startup and now that's a reality there is honestly no other job i'd rather be doing. We both get to see our kids everyday, i'm due to be taking my eldest (4) swimming at lunch.
Based on my experience (every startup is different), we do live and breath it, but at the same time we always make time for family, holidays and anything else we want to do (taking the kids for days out, nursery, the gym). Our startup is actually doing better than ever and I personally feel that because we put in all the work in the first few years whilst holding down a full time job we are now in a position to be able to enjoy the fruits of our labour and have a great work/life balance.
