Yep, 7 years. Reflective of the quality of conversation here, where I read daily but don't interact. However, seeing quality lower even further by baseless well-written opinions prompted me to respond. I'm especially disappointed to see when someone challenges an opinion that it got downvoted. This type of voting behavior makes having a dialog impossible. I'm not even saying you're wrong here, just the reaction is lacking substance.

I'm not sure why your dismissive tone is somehow upvoted here. I rarely comment and do not see how this as a strawman. If this is not a strawman, then explain how a 15yo with notepad can do the same as these solutions with a defensible stance. Is it because the person replying to you wasn't nice and give you fluffy kind words? I'm not understanding why the thin skin here. If you make a bold statement, it should be able to be backed up. Problem is here that you can't, so just ad hominem instead.

This is a great comment for perspective. I rarely comment on anything. The reason is that HN is full of folks who spend all day posting about issues that they've yet to contribute even something small, let alone something of significance in the topic area they pretend to be an "expert".

I'll share a personal example. I've not been a fan of your approach to RSS in the past. I was especially frustrated when developing a parser and having a fragmented landscape because of RSS 2.0, and other developers lack of understanding that your blog didn't represent a standards body. However, I never publicly complained about it because I understand why it happened, so I just shut my mouth and get back to making my parser work. At the time, even now, publicly complaining about your contributions would be incredibly disrespectful to your body of work.

The only way I would ever be in any position of criticism is if I had a similar body of work to compare. I didn't then, and I sure don't now, so I just respectfully keep my mouth shut and work on what I can contribute.

Absolutely agreed. I was also 5-0 Google. Examples: "mdc date" "python math" Google is the clear winner here, as well as many other scenarios where more specific searches yield incredibly higher quality results.

"Websockets: Everyone uses socket.io and for good reason."

This is stated as a fact, but I really just think it is a case of this was the only choice for a long time. I'd like to know the reason, because I don't think there is a clear one here. Other than socket.io couples a ton of baked in functionality, what's the benefit of it over sock.js or just native websockets?
