I love the idea of these challenges, but as a recent SF transplant\new job seeker, I'm absolutely appalled at how awful the execution usually is:
1. Company A sends me an exercise with slapped together and near nonsensical instructions, no browser compatibility requirements, and a link to a data API that doesn't resolve. Keep in mind this is an established company offering big bucks. After getting them to send me a link to a working API, submit perfectly functioning implementation with squeaky-clean code (~2 hour exercise). Receive absolutely no fucking feedback whatsoever - I only know that I was explicitly rejected because the 3rd party recruiter eventually told me. Still would love to know what they took issue with (maybe they were offended when I asked for clarification on their washy challenge?).
2. Company B sends me a ~5 hour Ruby coding exercise for a JavaScript position.
In both cases, a complete lack of respect for my time has been demonstrated. How naive of me to think that the quality of companies out here would be better. I'm thinking of calling quits on getting a new and exciting job out here already. Don't get me started with the other pieces of interview "process" of encountered. Yeesh.
