False compliments are just as insidious as insults e.g. telling the over weight person that they are not over weight

I understand that in an ideal world it would be nice to know the particulars of someones disdain for a said thing but it's not so simple. As I'm sure everyone else is guilty of ridiculing something in light conversation.
Scrutiny works wonders. If you know yourself that it is wrong, then it doesn't mean anything and shouldn't affect you. If you know that it is right, simply take it as constructive criticism.
