DDG can learn from diaspora. DDG is doing the same thing to google what diaspora is doing to facebook yet diaspora has earned so much attention before actually releasing anything. Having said that, I would never switch away from Google until something actually good comes out, but I would switch away from facebook more easily.
I am naturally a day guy, this is something that I can't help in most cases. But most of the productive work I do is in long nights, day time has so many other distractions that you can't actually focus on just one thing. So despite of being a day guy I make myself to work in nights when it is most required.
Decisions taken by any government are not as clear as it may look like from outside. I am sure most officials never cared about how much complication is involved in this, they just want to do it because other countries are doing it. And they may have no immediate plans on how to use this information but thats the way it happens.
I don't think its that easy. There are tools to help you , but then you need to spend time on them, learn by doing, learn my mistakes. And many a times we get tempted to be someone else on web, because of its nature of one way communication( I know its getting better , but still its passive medium). That's the main thing to keep in mind, to be yourself, doing things the way you would do in real world and yes its a little slow process it will take time.

Money is needed for living of founders, for paying salary, servers, rent and above all with money you can feel some freedom and take tough decisions, when you know you have those dollars in bank account you can be little relax and work.
Its not the ignorance of users by company, its the ignorance of mass about the open standards we talk about. Being big doesnt mean you are doing it all good.
