I took linear algebra a couple semesters ago in college, and have some matlab/octave scripts that solve linear systems using gaussian elimination, guass-jordan, etc. If you want I can email them to you guys if it would help you guys.
I feel the same way in that all of the fast pace start ups and tech industry is in the valley. If you don't live there it feels like you are missing out. On an other note, I am a college computer science major with a lot of programming experience interesting in brainstorming with others to get a start up going. Email is in profile.
I find that I am able to code a more rapid speed, when under the influence, but if I go pass a certain point the quality of my code drop significantly.
Chubb and Son Insurance Group. It would be my second year there, and I found it to be at a slower pace than I was expecting. I guess the insurance industry isn't at a fast pace compared to a software engineer industry.
I was in the same state of mind as you are in. I am a college student majoring in CS. I thought that all my programming projects were easy and only took me a short time to complete each one. However, I also thought I was a average or terrible programmer from looking at other peoples code. Then I realized that there will always be a better programmer out there, either because they have been doing it longer or they are just naturally better. You have to see that you are still a good programmer, but there will always be someone better. Just keep programming, and try to set a schedule for the time management problem and reward yourself for sticking to it.

Trying to move out to California and work as a software engineer at a start-up or one of the big companies. I am a sophomore in college on the east coast, any advice or suggestions?
I am currently a college student majoring in computer science, and I have written very simple iPhone apps. I am looking to learn/develop more intensive apps, and if I could be part of a development team would be great experience. I probably wouldn't be too much help because of my level of skill, but I could do the "bitch" work of the project. I am just looking for experience. Tell me if you are interested. Thank you.
Advance memory allocation uses linear algebra. Also graphics and shadows in game use transpose matrices. A lot of algorithms use linear combination and other linear algebra.
