I'd guess you used MRI 1.8.X.
I decided to benchmark other versions(and implementations) of Ruby.
= jruby 1.6.4 (7.3 seconds)
= Rubinius 1.2.4 (Little under 6 seconds)
= CRuby 1.9.2 (38 seconds)
= CRuby 1.8.7 (Little under 137 seconds)
