Just a quick look at 2024's CVEs, 0days for Windows is a security nightmare. Not singling out Windows specifically, but they have a lot.

Browsers only just recently patched browsers being able to be served javascript that scans local devices on 10.* and 192.168.* etc hitting IoT devices with exploits and payloads, hell even hitting open listening sockets on localhost and 0.0.0.0 -- that's cross platform, how many years did that go under the radar?

And now Windows is getting 'Recall' which will monitor and scan your every PC action to remember it for you using ML; I don't see that going back at all /s

Between Wordpress's bullshit and capitalist bullshit like Google doing things like this, I'm honestly just in utter shock at what the internet actually _is_ now adays.

Adtech is cyber warfare. Used to manipulate, control, and feed our minds with things that not even we understand what they're up to. There is no argument for uBlock being disabled/removed.

Fight for an internet where we're not exploited.

I watched the video/stream he did, and have very little good to say about it. while he may be right about it, cool; trademark infringement, yeah, they didn't give back, there's a feud; I'm sure it goes deep.

He disabled millions of wordpress sites from being able to update/access things. Plugins.. functionality.. Sure, they don't deserve to get free API access and all that; none of that matters.

What about non-profits for animal shelters, programs like st judes, things where livelihoods depend on it and they don't even know what an API or domain name is let alone what all this stuff is about and their whole stream of operations comes crumbling down because they paid somebody to set it all up for them and all they know to do is long in to wp-admin and press 'update' and make blog posts and check their 'payments' etc and modify/add things like their woo commerce plugins?

We're smart, we know what all this means, a lot of people I come across in the real world can utilize wordpress because it's easy for them, but if I explain in depth how things work they look at me like I'm speaking a foreign language.

He doesn't care.

I don't need that question answered. I already know.

I don't have an opinion on it, but when 75% of the internet is running wordpress, have some tact.

Instead of people who are visionaries like Tim Berners-Lee and Jimmy Wales working to pay it forward and give everyone access to the knowledge and resources they need to take us into the 21st century, we got Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk who sink capital into specific ego-driven goals, mostly their own.

What limited progress we see today happened in spite of tech, not because of it.

So everything we see around us, when viewed through this lens, is tainted:

  - AI (only runs on GPUs not distributed high-multicore CPUs maintained by hobbyists)
  - VR (delayed by the lack of R&D spending on LCDs and blue LEDs after the Dot Bomb)
  - Smartphones (put desktop computing on the back burner for nearly 20 years)
  - WiFi (locked down instead of run publicly as a peer to peer replacement for the internet backbone, creating a tragedy of the commons)
  - 5G (again, locked down proprietary networks instead of free and public p2p)
  - High speed internet (inaccessible for many due to protectionist lobbying efforts by ISP duopolies)
  - Solar panels (delayed ~20 years due to the Bush v Gore decision and 30% Trump tariff)
  - Electric vehicles (delayed ~20 years for similar reasons, see Who Killed the Electric Car)
  - Lithium batteries (again delayed ~20 years, reaching mainstream mainly due to Obama's reelection in 2012)
  - Amazon (a conglomeration of infrastructure that could have been public, see also Louis De Joy and the denial of electric vehicles for the US Postal Service)
  - SpaceX (a symptom of the lack of NASA funding and R&D in science, see For All Mankind on Apple TV)
  - CRISPR (delayed 10-20 years by the shuttering of R&D after the Dot Bomb, see also stem cell research delayed by concerns over abortion)
  - Kickstarter (only allows a subset of endeavors, mainly art and video games)
  - GoFundMe (a symptom of the lack of public healthcare in the US)
  - Patreon (if it worked you'd be earning your primary income from it)

Had I won the internet lottery, my top goal would have been to reduce suffering in the world by open sourcing (and automating the production of) resources like education, food and raw materials. I would work towards curing all genetic diseases and increasing longevity. Protecting the environment. Reversing global warming. Etc etc etc.

The world's billionaires, CEOs and Wall Street execs do none of those things. The just roll profits into ever-increasing ventures maximizing greed and exploitation while they dodge their taxes.

Is it any wonder that the web tools we depend upon every day from the status quo become ever-more complex, separating us from our ability to get real work done? Or that all of the interesting websites require us to join or submit our emails and phone numbers? Or that academic papers are hidden behind paywalls? Or that social networks and electronic devices are eavesdropping on our conversations?"

Me again:

It's definitely boring. All the good stuff is hidden behind $50 subscriptions (or whatever), hacker culture from what I've seen (and being alone most of my day) is everybody just working their jobs then disappearing or heading on to video games/a distraction.

It's ..something.

Definitely a bore fest. I like smallweb stuff. Cool projects, seeing things.

We went the wrong way.

Nice. I have a blog, but, I never expect I'll have any readers. Good to know there's good humanity out there online, I see it in the real world. Digitally it's really overshadowed by a mainstream, paywalled, everything is a service and costs money.

I'm always checking out the blogs I find on here though. I should interact more with them.

Nice. Things are doing pretty well where people migrated to over on ..the other platform since the API app destruction days, you should join.

Honestly if they banned you it's because it threatened their IPO. Spez and co don't care about communities or the people. They never even gave mods their mod tools. They just left AutoModerator to sludge along laggingly on a single core after firing the creator of it that went on to create https://tildes.net - a better 'reddit'.

Reddit just sold everybody's data to google for the AI data and are going to sell the same data back to reddit users with walled gardens and its new 'search'. Fuck 'em.

I'm sure it's a decent app. I won't use reddit. it's an astroturfed left-swinging graveyard where even Alexis Ohanian quit its board and left completely due to its racism years ago.

There's libreddit and redlib for self hosted frontends similar to geddit, but yours as a mobile app I can see would be appealing since reddit's as I've heard is less than ideal.

You can slap on .rss and .json at the end of the URLs and get your favorite subs from a decent rss reader. No need to comment anyways.

Join the fight for privacy, self-reliance, self-hosting, ditch the corporate overlords and find peace and serenity in the way things should be, the way they were before we got attention-sucked, sold out, and told this is what we need to build portfolios and resumes. As far as I'm concerned we can still git clone repos without an account.

They just banned a firefox addon for using archive websites to show paywalled content for a bogus ass DMCA notice/claim. Take that for how it is.

Meanwhile the content is behind a paywall. Hopefully more mom and pops shops open up, human creativity flourishes and we all have time and freedom to express ourselves and enjoy time with our families and live with the means to live comfortably while things like taco bell, arbys, call centers, etc replace workers with chat bots.
