Having gone through many burn-out and plateau periods, here's what I'd suggest:
- Get regular acupuncture. There's a reason it's first on my list. Yes, I realize it's hippy dippy. Yes, I realize it might not be proven. But regular acupuncture and chinese herbal medicine is life changing.
- Do something silly and out of the norm. Go lay on a beach for a week. Visit somewhere new. Forget your goals. Changing things up can give you a huge jump start.
- Cultivate the right habits. Oscillating between 45 minutes of work and 15 minute breaks can help. Meditation can help. Drinking enough water can help. Eliminate caffeine and soda. Use sunlamps and Vitamin D in the winter. Sleep with buckwheat pillows, earplugs, and blackout curtains.
- Get tested for Pernicious Anemia. This was a big one for me, because I'm of northern European / Scandinavian descent. Started supplementing with B12 and all my complaints of lethargy went away.
- Be OK burning out. You don't need to be push push pushing all the time. Sometimes what my body and psyche needs most is crappy TV and junk food (in moderation).
Merchants - Don't know how to use LevelUp. Don't have it displayed. User experience for merchants is wonky and unintuitive to boot.
Customers - Also have a strange, unintuitive user experience. Paying via "QR Code" scares some. Many consumers would much rather pay by handing over their card, as "antiquated" as that may be.
These issues combined mean that paying via LevelUp is slow and annoying.
The pivot to white label makes sense - except for the fact that their sales team seemingly doesn't understand complex enterprise sales. So, success there seem unlikely as well.
Do I like the idea of LevelUp? Yes. Would I ever use LevelUp? No.
One of the first rules of Adwords is to disable showing ads across the display network (this is enabled by default). You should only be showing ads on the search network (and only google.com at that, not the search partners).
Setup correctly, these types of scams aren't much of a problem with Adwords. FWIW, I've found Adwords to be very very effective, provided you know exactly what you're doing, and know how to adjust your campaign settings such that Google doesn't bleed unnecessary money from you.
Second Rackspace, love it.
Beanstalk for deployment of wp themes is fantastic.
Did not have a good experience with WPEngine. But other's have, so take that with a grain of salt.
Stay away from GoDaddy, obviously.
Personally, I hope Facebook owns the online dating space in a decade.
It's time for online dating to die. I've had enough of my little sister calling me up with horror stories, like the time a guy's first message was "what's the largest you've taken." No joke.
A world where online dating takes place on Facebook (or Ark) will be a better place.
Question: what's the story with the processes Best Buy developed that were pirated from TechForward? Does this mean they can't use them? Or can they? How does one prevent Best Buy from re-developing something similar going forward? After all, it won't take long for BB to make back their $27 million "investment."
Went to U of C ... Interviewed prospective students ... all that.
And, frankly: this essay knocks it out of the park. My essay (which, I'm convinced, got me into the school) was similarly off the wall.
Remember that the point of a response like this ... in addition to being well-reasoned, thought-out, and written ... is to leave a unique impression in the reader's mind ... one where, after they've read a gazillion apps that day, makes them say "admit the waldo programming kid!"
At Monetate, we rely a great deal on Google Analytics as well as a tool like Raven. With some TLC, Google Analytics can tell you a great deal. Here's a blog post that one of our marketing director's wrote recently that may be helpful: http://www.contentmarketinginstitute.com/2012/06/content-mar...
Not out of the ordinary. It fits with what we experienced with WPE as well. My take: if more people aren't complaining, it's because they're not monitoring their sites well.
Had to move our highest traffic site back to GoDaddy (which makes me cringe, don't get me wrong). Doing the same with our other two sites.
That said, I believe in what you guys are doing, think there's space in the market for someone like WPEngine ... it's just that, in my experience, you guys are executing poorly and dropping the ball quite often.
The author is essentially saying that learning to manipulate women teaches you to think strategically. He wouldn't say it like that ... but that's very close to what he's saying. He's NOT saying that it helps you learn social skills (which IS valuable and IS NOT really the point of what pickup is trying to teach you, let's be honest).
I could go on and on about this. But this Quora answer knocks it out of the park so I don't have to. Her analysis is spot on:
Disagree with articles that are so myopically focused on dropping out of college.
College is only overpriced if you make it overpriced (i.e. you major in underwater basket weaving).
My alma mater is one of the more expensive ones out there ... yet, between the connections I gained, classes I took, habits and ways of thinking it beat into me, and rep I acquired from the school ... it was worth every damn cent.
Please, please, please ... Be careful with Nootropics.
I'm a bit of a consciousness-naut and self-experimenter who's obsessed about increasing productivity. I've experimented a lot with Nootropics.
My thoughts?
Modafinil. Stay away from it. The stuff is wickedly addictive and many people have experienced significant long-term side effects, especially if they try to go off it.
Piracetam. Does a lot to reduce ADD and has strong anti-anxiety properties. That said, I found the benefits (minimally increased focus and less anxiety) to be far outweighed by the fact that you have to keep taking the stuff obsessively lest you go into withdrawal (coming off the stuff is horrible once you've been on it for a couple weeks).
If you want to increase productivity and focus there are a ton of other things you can do, starting with the basics of exercise, proper nutrition, and meditation.
If he wants that much, he should quit for wall street. At the very least, he shouldn't be working for a startup at your stage.
Frankly, if a potential startup CEO shot out that number ... at this stage in your business ... I'd start seriously questioning his abilities and expertise. That's crazy talk.
70K, max, I'd say, but be generous with options.
The bigger question is: why are you still working for another company?
