I agree. And I also think we should leave him alone. It is natural to just want to know where someone is. But he intentionally left the scene, and the right thing to do is to respect that.
Gathering lead information for personal contact for sales of certain products or services is just part of sales. Period.
Those in IT and development are often less social, which is the reason we tend to like things we don't have to talk with.
Therefore, those in IT and development tend to reject these established methods of sales.
We can argue up and down about whether or not sales could be done better with fewer calls, lunches, and other things of disdain to the less social. In some cases, the OP is correct. But overall, I think this is one of those points that is not worth arguing about. Just look at the numbers. If you can prove by the numbers that you sell more without gathering leads and having sales call potential customers, then do that. Otherwise, stop complaining.
Good points. Something else I kept in mind when reading was that Goldman has a responsibility to its employees and clients to be able to weather the future, and regardless of current market volatility, there is a large amount of uncertainty; that uncertainty is prime motivation for focusing on making money by any practical means.
That said, these are not excuses for bad behavior, and even though Greg Smith has a good bit of motivation to spin all of this in a way that benefits him, he puts himself at risk by saying this.
