Perhaps Tumblr to a certain degree? I've met some young front-end guys that cut their teeth making Tumblr themes. I suppose what you can modify with Tumblr Themes is more limited than winamp skins.
Organic in the sense of how it's used in the industry. Google's search algorithm is set by Google but when talking about the search results people tend to differ between "organic" and paid.
The difference here is that "organic" is considered Google's and Facebook's best attempt to show their user what is most relavent to them. Some speculate that both companies are modifying these results to optimize paid results but there is no smoking gun that is true.
How is the relationship suppose to be beneficial to Facebook? No one signs up for Facebook to keep in touch with their favorite brands, they sign up to keep in touch with friends. Facebook allows brands to communicate to their users but their added benefit hardly helps FB at all. The only way it does help Facebook is if they monetize these relationships, which is what Facebook is attempting to do. I'm not sure there is legit proof that FB has decreased Fan Page outreach organically (the only way you could claim they're "abusing" the relationship - I don't see an issue with FB charging brands to reach more fans non-organically.
Mark Cuban isn't God, I don't think this is a "huge" signal at all. IMO, Cuban's critiques of YouTube have been similar - which I feel have also been proven wrong with time.
Always take these surveys with a grain of salt. It's difficult to get accurate information from people self-reporting their behavior. Facebook has become so ingrained in peoples' routines that they don't even realize their actual usage (and in many times are in denial). I'd like to see if Facebook feels their analytics back up this self-reported data - my gut says it would not.
This is also true about the advertising. Many times effective advertising gets into the subconscious - you don't realize it's working on you. The ads have to at least raise awareness of the product.
I use to feel that way as well. Thing is - everything is a gamble. Holding your money in the US Dollar is a gamble in the dollar. How can you hold (and ideally grow) wealth without exposing it to risk?
Do you ever click on google AdSense ads? I never click on any ads personally. I don't look at that as an indication that others don't though. FB ads raise awareness for me. In particular, ads for movies make me realize that the movie is out and I'll go see it - but I won't click on the link.
What about when someone buys a 65 person company with no (or close to no) revenue for $1.65 Billion? That's what GOOG did with YouTube, and YouTube should have at least $1 Billion in revenue this year. They got it cheap in retrospect.
