we use fogbugz + gtalk + jaconda (like campfire) for casual chat + teamspeak for voice chat (or skype occasionaly). teamspeak works great because everybody can be connected and you can speak at anytime using a push-to-talk button or create rooms for meetings.

For 3DS enabled site in France (don't know if it's the same elsewhere) it sends you a code by SMS that you have to enter in the popup. I think this is a much better way. But I have to agree, the process is really not well thought out and as bad as it can be UX wide.
The question was raised when the made their proposal. The contract work was schedule to go until December and would continue if my decision was negative. However I do not have any other contracts lined up but I'm not really in need of cash right now.
