Definitely a valid concern. And ideally I think it would be more open to competition. Though at least with this it's creating competition for Comcast, which currently is the only way to get adequate internet here (and a lot of other places).
Also the company (Cruzio) has been in the community for decades, is run by a local family, and has done a lot for the community over the years. They are way more connected to Santa Cruz then Comcast ever will be. Not to say they couldn't abuse this situation and that concern deserves a good response.
I'm not affiliated with Cruzio, though I was a customer way back in the dialup days.
Summary: guy gets hired by company he doesn't like in an industry he doesn't like by someone he doesn't like. Spends a year there doing things he doesn't like.
Writes book about what he didn't like about it.
I'm sure HunSpot isn't for everyone. But I'm also sure it's awesome for some people. They make a real product people find useful and helps them run their business.
Don't believe everything you read. Especially when it's to promote something (like a book or a company).
Definitely, 27 is pretty low. But it did drive a lot more traffic than being #5 on Show. Which I think is interesting. I would have thought more people looked at Show. But I guess not.
I had looked at it briefly before and took another look at it today. Definitely some of the same angles we are hitting. But I'd say, yes they are more on the Microsoft Project end of the spectrum and we are trying to be more on the Trello / Basecamp end.
Have you tried Smartsheet? They say they have a 1 million users but I've never seen / heard of anyone using it.

Totally agree. Email is very useful and it's here to stay. We'll have new tools that supplement it like slack, but the idea of the inbox tied to a unique address is not going away.
As AI gets better email will be more useful. Smart filters that show you just the messages you want to see will improve.
I've been through this. But also you can revisit your old interests after a break.
I played D&D when I was in junior high and high school. But took a 15 year break. A few of my friends were playing so I joined a game and played again for a year, it was awesome.
I was deep into RC cars when I was about 12. But hadn't touched them since then. When I was 34 I got into RC planes and now FPV quads.
It's been really fun to revisit these earlier interests as an adult. For example I have the money now to buy the nice toys I wasn't able to when I was younger.
I also have two kids and am revisiting and picking up new interests as they grow up.
What are the existing apps like for this? Why are they lacking? What's your insight?

On a technical note, do you have a way to get the data on the venues? Especially cost? If you do that sounds interesting. You might start with a simpler service: Search for event venues within a certain budget.
How many people are using Slack in this way? I like the idea of this but haven't developed the habit of using the slack in chat commands yet. Anyone who is using slack in this way comment on how it helps them vs just switching to the app and using it directly?
You should add more information to your site. More about what exactly you'll do. Comparison to other ways people get these things done. Maybe some testimonials.
You need to instill an incredible amount of trust for someone to sign up for this type of service online. I don't think your website is quite there yet.
Stripe has an incredible brand that many people already trust because they are using it as the way they get paid.
You have a high bar to get over to rival that type of trust as an unknown company.
