The intended takeaway of this article was that there was never any "gaming" being done. The major open source contributions and the related accomplishments are legitimate and noteworthy in their field — as indicated by the projects' broad adoption across the web and the organic press coverage. The post is intended as a walkthrough on how to efficiently think about qualification. And how important the Internet is to that.

I just tried digging for examples of supervotes in the wild. The idea is intriguing.

Couldn't find an aggregator that does it. Interestingly, however, it's a common voting tactic on reality competition TV (e.g. The Voice, American Idol) [1].

Thanks for pointing this out to me. I had in fact forgotten about this rule.

I'd like to prod that rule, though, and see if being vocal about the importance of upvoting can shift the participation rate on a per-community basis. My hunch is that it can, and Algolia can help us find out over time.

I chose the subject independent of the audience — despite knowing how to distribute to the tech audience.

I can't write something I'm not passionate about or don't want to learn myself.

But I was fortunate that this topic appeals to many in the tech space — or at least a scientific approach to this topic does. I am an engineer myself, so I'm naturally writing for a likeminded audience.

Ultimately, almost anything can hit the front page of HN. This is a smart, considerate, and curious crowd. Good content tends to make its way to the top regardless of the niche/market.

Wrote a guide that summarizes the science of building muscle: https://julian.com/learn/muscle/intro.

It made a few thousand in Amazon referral fees after being at the top of HN, Product Hunt, and Designer News for 4 days. As these traffic spikes wear off, I expect it to continue at at least $1k/mo.

To maximize referral fees, I use this clever service called A-fwd, which geo-redirects visitors to their appropriate Amazon.tld so that they can make a seamless purchase without switching regions. This also allows for my affiliate codes to stay intact, and for me to collect worldwide Amazon affiliate revenue.

I also had to learn the ins and outs of Amazon Associates policies, which are incredibly finicky (no Amazon links in emails, no showing product pricing on your homepage, etc.) and frequently results in unannounced account closure that requires you to pester their support team to get things back online.

This guide is about where you're starting from and how efficiently you can get bigger. Not about becoming massive (which is in large part a function of your genetics).

#1: Reps. When working out for muscle size (as opposed to strength), it's optimal to use a weight that’s light enough to do a set of at least 8 reps with but heavy enough that you can't easily do more than 10 reps [1, 2]. This range of 8 to 10 reps means it's fine if you stop at 8, 9, or 10 reps in any set. Go as high as you can while stopping one rep short of the maximum you feel you could do.

Stopping one rep short of exhaustion is an important technique: It doesn’t decrease your rate of gains and it increases your recovery time between sets so that you can complete all your reps (study, study, study) [3, 4].

#2: Shrinking from overworking is surprisingly a real thing. The science is unclear as to how exactly muscle mass responds to resistance exercise, so my answer would be made up if I gave you one. What I can tell you is that "being overworked" is the result of lifting too heavy for too many total reps. This might seem impossible since your body should be unable to continue lifting past a natural point of exhaustion, but if you use machine exercises (especially a pulley machine), it's easy to cause a disproportionate amount of stress to your muscle relative to the incrementing heaviness trajectory you were lifting for free weights.
