Captalism has given power to the people. With $25, I can start a company in the US, which has the possibility of making me very wealthy.
This is not the case in any country that has embraced socialism.
Most of this is just a smokescreen anyway. Even the social groups that protest are organized and mostly paid for by people with deep pockets to maintain power.
Nobody truly wants to help the people. Money is power and it has been for almost all of humanity.
I'm just surprised that a group that claims to be intelligent clamors for a system that ensures they will never keep they money they earned.
Why would HN ever do this? HN has become an echo chamber of specific views.
The censoring reminds me of 'safe spaces' we now have at universities. Nobody wants to even see text they disagree with, so they downvote it.
It really makes it difficult for us to have open and honest conversations.
I suspect that people are either using bots to down vote (which would be so easy on this site), or manually down voting people they don't like (regardless of the comments).
A few months back, I posted a few comments with a different account that were down voted. From then on, everything I posted went to 0 or -1 within an hour or so (even comments that were on topic, friendly, and agreeable).
We really need a better system where trolls are removed, but personally disagreeable comments stay. It means that unless you completely agree with the current narrative, your voice gets silenced.
The issue with basic income is in the long-term. When more and more generations of people start to depend on it (I've seen it with welfare in my hometown), it becomes a crutch and will stifle their future success.
Eventually, there won't be enough people giving back into the system and the whole thing will collapse. Before this happens, taxes will continue to be raised in people in lower income brackets.
The politicians love it though. It creates an instant voter base. Why would a person, receiving free money, vote for someone that will take it away?
Because of things like this, I wish we had laws in place that all voters had to at least 1) work some sort of job (it doesn't matter what it is) and 2) proof they paid income taxes.
