You make a very interesting point here. My thinking was that the yearly upgrade programs such as AT&T's "Next" would drive even more growth as consumers upgraded their phone every 12 or 18 months. It would seem that these programs might not be so popular after all.

I agree. I love their current pricing strategy for extra storage. I'm hoping that those prices are for Apps customers only (possibly as shared storage?) as the doc mentions administrators:
"When a user reaches the limit, administrators can purchase the necessary space of 20GB for $ 4 per month to 16TB (Google Docs are not counted in the quota of storage space)."
This has the potential to be huge, especially since it's the brainchild of Google. One thing I noticed is that they didn't showcase object recognition of any type in the promo video. When I heard they were testing these glasses, Google Goggles is the first thing that came to mind. It would be really useful to auto-search objects by simply looking at them and issuing a command. I'm sure it's on their roadmap, if it's not already live in the glasses alpha/beta product.
While the concept is solid, getting carriers to go along with this is going to be impossible I would imagine. The other issue at hand is hardware pricing, especially for US consumers.
In the US, carriers love to lock their customers in by SIM locking their subsidized hardware and customers have come to expect this low cost subsidized hardware.
If you suddenly switched to a system where hardware was sold at retail cost, there would be a lot of confusion. I am guessing that if you ask the typical US consumer if they would like to buy their iPhone at $199 and commit to a contract or pay $649 for the ability to switch to another carrier at will, they will choose the contract option. It's what they have come to expect.
This type of system seems more suited to work in countries where subscribers already purchase unlocked hardware at full retail prices.
