I don't know why the author used that example. The point of fasting is nutritional ketosis and Jobs was known as a fruitarian for a large chunk of his life which is at direct odds with ketosis. Fasting does have some beneficial outcomes for cancer patients: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/fasting-might-boo...
The best source of fasting benefits I've found is Dr. Dom D'Agostino. He's a huge proponent of occasional fasts and the ketogenic diet.
Is he using COGS in the right sense? I think he means CIF, cost/insurance/freight. My company produces products in Europe and Japan and we use the term 'landed CIF' to include all the costs associated with mfg, freight, and duties before it hits our US warehouse.
COGS for us is how much is sold through a distributor to an end user.
At that point I would imagine it's the same concept as net carbs. Obviously not all food/matter is digestible. I do think it's still safe to say calories in/calories out however since most of us aren't entering shredded paper, charcoal and wood into MFP logs.
Honestly, I think it is a mix of glycemic index being affected by the longer fast and eating less. As I stated in my response below, my experience has been that the fewer meals I eat, the less I overeat.
I know that last statement isn't anything groundbreaking, but if you can get through the initial hunger created by changing your eating schedule, it can be hugely beneficial to limiting your caloric intake.
My go to with Chipotle is to get a bowl w/ fajita veggies subbed for rice and beans, double barbacoa, cheese, lettuce, hot salsa and sour cream. I will eat what I can and then mix the leftovers with eggs the following day.
So most of my meals are very bachelor-like. Cook some sort of protein(chicken/steak/fish) or eggs/meat/cheese in a pan on the stove and then an entire steamable bag of frozen veggies of some sort. If I want to get really fancy I will do either a stir fry or beef/turkey chili with some veggies/beans mixed in. Depending on how busy I am during the day this can be anywhere from 4-8 pm.
If I have hunger issues later on I will drink cold water or unsweetened vanilla almond milk (It's crazy, IIRC, an entire half gallon is only 200 calories).
At the end of the day it will always be calories in vs. calories out.
My personal experience is that I try to only eat 1 meal per day. Intermittent fasting is nothing new, and when I combine it with a low carb diet, it is extremely effective for me. I went from ~300 down to 225 in a matter of 4-5 months.
As long as I am busy, I hardly notice any hunger during the day now that I am used to the schedule and the 1 meal makes it much harder to over eat. 2000 calories is extremely hard to take in all at once, so it basically puts you at quite a deficit just due to the logistics of eating that quantity of food in a small window of time.
I know this was a few days ago, but I forgot to check back. The reason I ask, is that this company http://seakeeper.com/ used to be a customer of mine. It seems like an extremely cool concept and I know it works for smaller vessels and the company is currently developing larger solutions for the government and oil industries.
Are there any articles or press out there that describe the stabilization tech used on the barge?
A lot of the things when looking through Google seem to focus on the challenges of guiding the rocket but not stabilizing the platform.
I guess it tends to be a non-issue since it seems their plan all along was landing it on land, but I'd be really interested to see the design story that went into the barge.
The worst was a week ago on Monday. I wasn't feeling well and realized that the deadbolt on my front door hadn't been opened in over 36 hours. Tuesday was definitely a coffee shop day at that point.
Since I work in sales, I am stuck to the typical 9-5 availability schedule.
If I feel like I'm in a rut, I go to a coffee shop to change it up. I have one 40 feet from my front door, or I take a longer walk on a nicer day to the coffee shop I frequented from my last apartment.
It forces you to shower, dress like a real human being and can sometimes substitute for that human interaction.
I'd take it a step further and and go with a slot. Closer to the structure of the 2 circles with the ease of a slit. I am surprised the operator/programmer of the machine didn't suggest something like your idea or mine, since it is common practice for them to make engineering designs more manufacture-able/structurally sound.
(Source: I used to program water jets and was constantly re-designing parts sent by engineers/designers.)
Also, I would definitely move towards die-cutting once he settled on a final design, but with his sense of tinkering, I doubt he'll ever have a 'final' design.
Agreed, this is just a re-branding for the appearance of helping innovation. Now, if they were taking on student's private debt and letting them do IBR, that would be a program; however, the logistics and risk would be absurd.
