You should try MongoDB. Ad-hoc querying is supported, as well as map-reduce. We looked long and hard to various nosql databases, such as couch, cassandra, hbase, etc, and realized that in terms of setup, speed, client interfaces, and most importantly, flexibility, MongoDB was the easiest and best to get going.
