this is inherent to fractional reserve banks and maturity transformation. any bank would be vulnerable if there's a bank run. this is a basic thing to understand before making claims on this issue imho.
Seems like people are criticizing this partially because it's pitched as an alternative to normal tourism. Just wanted to point out that Chris Arnade has done quite compelling photo journalism based on his way of engaging with communities, so what might seem like non sequitors or edge lord stuff might be in service of an implicit goal of his that most travelers don't share. Not that he does himself any favors with some of the framing.
Based on how this gets operationalized in argumentation, 99% of people would not. Being confronted with Singer led me to reject ethics, not to become more ethical.
Worldviews don't win points for being expensive and industrious. But my point, had you seen past your mood affiliation, was that explaining the origin of a phenomenon doesn't tell you its value.

If I were to say, "America had a negative impact in geopolitics when it invaded Iraq," it's like you responded with "I'm sorry, but that just seems anti-American."
This treats arguments like opaque tokens where we know in advance which are good and bad, and need to make sure we have lots of good and few bad. But actually arguments have content and to know whether they are good or bad, we have to engage with them.
And language is just a tool to hunt better and coordinate distribution of berries. And human consciousness is just a tool to model other minds to negotiate better. Nothing to see here.
Notwithstanding the replication crisis, "grit" is a social psychology term that has been popularized in recent years. It's presented as a desirable trait for lifetime success. I think attributing this perceived relative debasement to a company is a bit much.
It seems like the model here is just a series of temporary alternatives (if we're lucky, creating value isn't easy). But people need software to be long-term viable to invest in learning and locking into the ecosystem. Seems good for the founders though.
