Not going into management too early. The opportunity was presented to me on more than one occasion, but I felt I wasn't where I needed to be technically yet. Waiting was worth it, because when I finally made the switch, I was already an influencer and well respected technically. I'm able to call BS when necessary, and actually provide valuable feedback and review to all of my team. I think I would always feel unqualified to lead technical people otherwise.
I keep wondering why they don't open Siri up to the command line or applescripts. It seems like that would be a great way to grow the Siri ecosystem. Does HN have any ideas why it is so locked down?

As team leader, I appreciate honesty more than how someone sees their self. It takes a stronger person to be honest that they are in danger of missing a deadline. Resources and priorities can be shifted. Teams can adapt, and I'm sure that the product owner would like to know earlier rather than later that the deadline may be missed.
