Don't get me wrong, introducing foreign species like the Nile perch is dangerous at best. And it's a tragedy in this case.
But the movie tries to imply that the Nile perch related trade is worse then the alternative. That's despite that every person they ask TELLS them as much as this sucks, what we did before sucked worse.
Then there's the whole SPOILER alert: Africa exports fish, imports guns for war and European kinds get grapes in winter while Europe exports guns.
Except that's racist B.S. Africa is continent, South Africa is the country that export the grapes. Poor eastern European countries exported the guns, rich Western Europe imported the grapes. And it was African countries at war that imported guns. This is nothing to do with Nile perch.
And then there's intercuting the fish factories with the steet kids. What's that supposed to tell us? That the exporters don't care enough the poverty at home? What about all the jobs they create. Perhaps that more money should go toward eradicating the Nile perch, is that even possible?
That the Nile perch was introduced for trade? But it wasn't, people were stupid and it was introduced for food.
That allowing trade makes things worse? But the gun trade has nothing to do with the perch, except they both happen to use the same planes. Does that mean the airports are bad too?
It's a good article, but the expendability of the male is an old concept. As is the over representation of males on the extremes.
That's why bucks and does are so different and that's why in most animal populations the sex ratio is not 50/50, but heavily favors females, because one male can fertilize many females.
I think what's new here, is that we've had pretty good gender equality for a while now and now it's becoming OK to for serious people to defend males.
I just don't see the point, as long as we're a species where one male can fertilize many females, the fundamental nature of being a human male won't change. That's life, deal with it.
I love problems you can solve by thinking. But I've often had simple facts, which were not covered anywhere, on tests.
These are dry, unrelated, having nothing to do with puzzling out facts. Facts, which were not in any reading material and were never mentioned in class, and no recommendation for independent study was made.
This is not about learning or teaching or thinking. It's about sucking at teaching and testing. And testing stuff you meant to go over but never actually did.
I wonder if you could turn this into a business? Actors probably wouldn't be as committed, and if people knew they were going to a game they probably would never forget it's just a game.
I know I am going to get down voted for this, but here it goes anyway.
This is how reddit went to hell. From interesting articles, to interesting articles which are also group therapy for a prominent minority of smart people with some serious problems.
And that's the thing, most smart people, the countless I've met, the dozens of brilliant engineers I work with every day, they have none of these problems. They are family men, never had those problems.
There are some unfortunate and very troubled souls, and they turn smart social news sites into sad group therapy.
What does annoy him is people misunderstanding his work – or “the technology”, as he puts it. One example he gives is an article about him in which the journalist confuses Java and JavaScript (the former is a stand-alone program which can be accessed online, the latter is a browser-dependent scripting language). We both laugh at the mistake, and for a moment I feel like Bak and I have clicked.
Is technology that hard, or are journalists that lazy? both?
