There are a couple of note books (CamiApp, Shotnote) that have appeared in Japan that are quite similar. I found the design pretty good, though I stopped using them.. I think mainly because I switched form Evernote to org-mode.

Apparently the issues might be due "to the leapsecond being added without calling clock_was_set() to notify the hrtimer subsystem of the change", a possible fix being to patch kernel/time/timekeeping.c to be leapsecond aware.

Otherwise what you are saying is to be afraid of the status quo because they have many ways of monitoring your past so you should behave, isn't it? If your 'future employer' gets biased by this kind of stuff then it would make sense to reconsider applying for work there, and whether it is really worth it to keep on supporting such kinds of disciplinary systems. What he is claiming sounds reasonable, and there should be no lose-lose when facts are facts.

This looks great! I tried it with the default settings and could share a sessions very easily. On the other hand I'm trying to use `wemux rogue` but I get the following:

  wemux rogue
  unknown command: rogue
  To see a list of wemux commands enter 'wemux help'...

And wemux help does not list `wemux rogue` as one of the options. I installed it by following the `brew install` process in the README.

I agree that open sourcing it is one way, but is it the best way? Since the users depend on it, that would mean that they would pay for it right? I think that the obvious need here is to find a way so that it would make it possible for somebody to build a good enough service and then be able to just neglect it, the same way you can neglect desktop software.

Before there was an "app store", people would think the same way and just open source software they cannot find a way to build a business from but that has severely changed thanks to having something as convenient as the app store.

I can think of some ways that a platform like this would work, and I think that it could be built by using something like Cloudfoundry, though I have the feeling that somebody is building it already somewhere.

It could be a platform where you create an application, someone confirms that the application is good enough and does what it is intended, you push the application, and offer it to other users in the same ecosystem.

Then you create the platform so that other users can clone an instance of your application by charging them. If you burn out, you can just stop developing the application, and the users that relied on your application. Otherwise you can keep on developing the application and then charge for the updates etc... etc... etc...

I think someone should do it, at least an abstraction of it. I would be "too frightened" to do it, maybe you could raise VC capital and become part of the problem by saying that it is the app store for web apps or something.

I'm not a researcher myself, but I have seen the efforts done in this field by the org-babel project very interesting. It is a literate programming mode for Emacs that attempts to make conducting this style of research more straightforward.

I was a big fan of library.nu. As a student in Mexico, you just cannot get some of the books that were available in there, so it was incredibly useful. I no longer used the site so much, but I'm still grateful that this site was live when I went to university. It kind of marvels me how artificial are the limits that humans put on knowledge that can be useful to others, I hope we can solve this problem someday.

Interesting, sending daily/weekly reports is default behavior at Japanese companies (where doing busywork is actually a good thing sometimes, since it seems that there are many zombie companies that get funding just for the sake of having people employed), so I'm surprised to see this practice considered so highly in the context of the Valley. Though I'm suspicious that this practice would be a secret itself, it seems so basic that it must be written on a textbook somewhere. e.g. "give importance to communication", "it's a ritual", etc...

This idea has also stuck in my head since sometime ago (I think it was a comment by @jrockway who said that he got up really early because at that time there is nothing else to do but work), though I do not do it everyday, only occasionally when I want to finish something... Considering the amount of legacy Perl scripts that I have had to rewrite since I got to Japan due to a lack of Perl developers that can mantain them, I'd think that Japan's Galapagos argument does not work so much in this case. I think that it is also losing strength around here.

I have also been somewhat worried about the "safety first" approach that a lot of the Japanese young take around here. I have been in Tokyo just for some months, but I truly believe that things could be infinitely better if I only these guys could find the proper motivation.

What I like the most about Org syntax is that it gives you a framework to plan your tasks by using nothing but text. For example:

- [%] Task 1

+ [X] Task a

+ [ ] Task b //C-c on this task will check this an calculate the %

+ [ ] Task c

Plus, it has comments. I haven't researched enough but I cannot remember of any other syntax that has comments.

* Why I like Org syntax

When you export this to latex, post it to wordpress or with org2blog, etc... the comments won't be shown. Very useful.

To apologize is the first single thing I was taught during my 'Hourensou'/報連相 training at the Japanese company I'm working on. Whenever something bad happens, you first have to put yourself in their shoes, and just apologize."Moushi wake gozaimasen...". It does not matter whose fault was it, before trying to explain anything you have to first apology and then you can explain, otherwise it is going to be considered as rude.

If the marketing campaign was that effective in Czech Republic, that might explain the recent increase in marketing from Google here in Tokyo since 2011 started. I can't remember how many times I saw the same Google Chrome commercials over and over during the first days of the year, and I also noticed and increase in Google related advertising inside of the trains, etc...

Have you ever heard of the Google Summer of Code? It is this program ran by Google every summer where you get to contribute to an Open Source project. You can only apply to this program if you are student, and I think it would be a very valuable experience for you if you manage to get in. Working with Open Source can also give you the time traveling experience that you want by receiving the advice of the most experienced developers from that community, since it is in their best interests for you to become a better developer so you can help within that project.

I would recommend Alex Kerr's 'Dogs and Demons' book about Japan. It is kind of old (2001) but it is still a great read about what have been some of the specific problems from Japan these past decades.

I think this is a very good advice in general. Doing the right thing can be difficult given the constraints that we usually have, but it is definitely worth it. It will sound silly but I truly believe that one way of doing the right thing is to think whether doing it will change the world or not. Once I have that idea on my head, doing the right thing gets easier I think, no matter the context...
