Well modern explorers have the benefit of always knowing that there is a "something", but probably still understand that there is risk in what they are doing.
Historically though, plenty of explorers from many different cultures travelled to where there was potentially "nothing".
Why would Pacific Island cultures be any different?
Maybe not DSLR Killer, but the image quality is pretty good on latest iphones and pixel used with apps like filmic pro - check out some of the clips in this Peter McKinnon video.

I think this opens up opportunities for great photography and cinematography at an affordable price, which can only be a good thing.
