Many of Yelp's problems are due to the star-rating system. My startup, MyFab5, provides people a new way to recommend/find restaurants.
We started by replacing the star rating system with the MyFab5 ranking system. On our platform users rank up to 5 of their favorite places instead of rating/reviewing them (e.g. my top 3 places for Tacos in Austin, TX). It is important to note that people only rank their favorite places so there is no negative content. Users can also attach photos and comments to their rankings. We're all about helping people find the best restaurant for any food or drink related category. So Yelp may be more useful if you're trying to investigate a particular business that isn't truly fantastic. Yelp is also better for anything non-food/drink related.
Our platform is integrated with Instagram so if you're viewing a business that is ranked for Tacos then we show you all the Instagram photos of Tacos taken at that location.
The entire infrastructure is designed to create value for consumers AND businesses. Consumers can't bash businesses on myfab5 (rightfully or non-rightfully) like they do on Yelp. Also, how would myfab5 extort a small business owner if there is no negative content to take down?
