I wonder to what extent the abuse she received was just due to her having used JS. Klabnik and Haines are both huge Rubyists and Rubyists seem extremely hostile to JS and those who use it, probably because of Node.js stealing Rails' (and by extension Ruby's) thunder and a growing awareness that JS has inherent advantages over Ruby for which Ruby will likely be unable to compensate, such as shipping in every major web browser and having a modern, efficient, jitting VM in the form of V8 that's an order of magnitude faster than MRI.
