Terveen was always honest about what works and what doesn't work. Its good to see them acknowledge that this is something they need to dive into and fix.
The blackmore lidar startup that aurora recently acquired was a spinout from an active sensing defense company. Additionally a lot of the precision guided munitions make heavy use of active sensing. For a lot of military applications they are fine with active sensing because there isn't a concern about people knowing where they are the concern is getting the job done and collecting as much data as possible.
It's not getting publicized very much but they did lay off people from the core AV teams (planning, controls, perception, mapping, etc.) in addition to the otherwise cited groups.
There's a lot you can do with just a single camera and imu. PTAM is just one example there are other formulations but it tends to work well without using a ton of CPU/GPU resources
