I'm a backend dev (mostly JVM) and consider my strengths/focus/interest in developing clean, scalable code. I don't know if that makes sense but I'm more a "algorithm" person than anything else. I had never really an interest an the underlying hardware. Actually I loathe any sys admin work.
Now, being a freelancer I often find myself working with smaller startups that need besides developing backend code someone who knows his way around servers, cloud computing, virtualisation etc
My question: how much should I force myself to learn those things? Esp. given that I want to continue working as a freelance / remote developer?
Or should I just say that's not my expertise but then I'm afraid of closing doors.
