Just 5 minutes ago I was working with a developer who, after pulling up Google in her browser, immediately started checking her text size settings thinking somehow they became mis-configured.
That was my first reaction, as well.
I kept hitting ⌘0, wondering why nothing was happening.
Hah. I just got my X font server working yesterday, and I just assumed it was somehow related to that. Guess not.
I had this same exact reaction. No idea what was happening until I saw this post here.
The first thing I noticed was the changed spacing between the links and their underlines. It always looks unnatural when a frontend dev does this. Source:

}Some people prefer it because it doesn't overlap your descenders, but it bothers me too.
Quite a change for Google - they tend to avoid these types of tweaks unless it's been absolutely proven to improve the user experience.
I'm curious why Google updated web search and image search while leaving the rest (news, maps, videos, etc.) the same. Seems inconsistent on their part.

I estimate the percentage of searches I do from an actual Google web page is less than 0.5% (not counting searching again from the results page). I always search directly through my browser, whether that is "g <search terms>" in Opera, or with the search field in Firefox.
Such a change is completely missed by folks like me.

Is it just me or is the padding totally weird on the result page?
Like a 10px or something padding on the left and a max-width on the page that make it not fill up the window.
interesting that they followed up the recent change of bringing in the right hand ad column no matter the width of your browser window to beside your results with something a bit more innocuous.

I gave up noticing changes on google years ago when they went through a particularly dense spate of "Google" image mods for everything from International Talk-Like-a-Pirate-Day to World AIDS Day (my Birthday! - probably explains the bitterness)....

It's a bit weird to make big headlines out of every changed pixel on the Google HP. Then again, these changes might be worth billions...
Hmmm... would have expected a discussion about the motivations for such a change, as I see it this is just cult worship (coupled with groupthink down-modding for even voicing an alternative opinion).... I expect more from this community (cue baseless down-modding)
There were some blog posts by Google explaining the results of some of their changes. For example apparently they don't even deliver valid HTML to speed up loading time, as that has been shown to retain more users.
