Great tips! I had no idea that Akamai had an on-the-fly image processor. That is pretty cool.

Although, at this point, what is the advantage of using responsive design over a dedicated mobile template for your site? If you are going to be doing the work to dynamically load images and such via javascript, why not just build a totally separate view for mobile and push it over via the server?
