From reading the article, it seems that they define their edge more as being able to leverage the existing market of cost-effective consumer components and more common consumer grade manufacturing in order to create modular defense technology with the help of software, rather that create an expensive manufacturing pipeline from the ground up like legacy defense companies. Their Lattice software is used to figure out how to integrate these more cost effective components and manufacturing practices.
Out of curiosity, does anyone have a countercase for entities like Anduril? I understand being hesitant about building weapon systems, but what's the alternative? Do we want to rely on Boeing and Northrup until the next war? How do we avoid war while also not finding ourselves unprepared?
Despite hesitation about weaponry-building, I can't think of a viable alternative I prefer to upstarts like Anduril attempting to change the calculus of the next war.

As long as humans have different views of right and wrong, how resources are allocated or how society should be configured, there will always be demand for the capacity to kill each other in dreadfully efficient ways.

Hmm, I wonder who will benefit most from billions of dollars of additional spending on weapons?
That is one of the ideas that Anduril sells itself on, in that traditional defense sector companies have been benefiting from enormous defense contracts from the US government, with too little return on investment for the US.

Honestly, it's just sad that a race to building more weapons is being sold as a major technological advancement...
It is not about how the existence of the arms race is causing advancements in itself, simply by the fact of the arms race existing, but that the US is falling behind in the arms race, because technological advancements from the companies that participate in the defense sector that participate in the arms race are falling behind.

Instead we should be de-stigmatizing trade work and investing in developing manufacturing skill in our workforce. For instance, brother is a machinist who saves his employer a great deal of money fixing manufacturing machines, however this is a dying art held up by just a few people who love it and take pride in it.
Pride in good work through good communication between people is what is needed to make things run smoothly. Don’t agile it, or worse Amazon Iron Sensei it. C’mon, this is supposed to be the land of the free.
