I would have thought age would be a big influence here as it was widely reported that younger generations leaned more remain.

You mean compared to the great advances in the standard of living across the EU since 2016?
I'm on the other side of the channel, and the "standard of living" has been going spectacularly down before and after the Brexit, so there's that.
Not to mention some little less known facts: people can legitimately vote or go against the improvement of their "standard of living", if it's for greater causes and principles. Not everybody measures everything in monetary terms.
