I'm shocked they're trying the carrot (in the most wishy-washy sense of the term) vs. the stick.
The amount of pressure they're under to improve the entire company's performance from 5 separate activist investors is insane. It's unheard of in enterprise software and I can't recall that number of activists twisting the screws on a single company in any industry.
I was skimming through their latest quarterly earnings call to see if there was any mention of Heroku... no dice but they were very proud of how they're now making sure that their salespeople are accountable for hitting their sales quotas.
Let that sink in for a bit: Salesforce's salespeople didn't have to perform at the bare minimum standard to keep their jobs until a figurative gun was held to the head of their CEO. I can't imagine a $10 donation will make people want to come in to the office (and be accountable) without hardcore peer/middle manager pressure

And what about the massive tax credits for Twitter that SF gave them to incentivize Market - and now everything is shutting ddown and the complaints of homeless messes are back down to mid 1990's where that whole area around Twitter was so FN dirty and sketchy.
I found two dead bodies and a friend who had a really nice apartment on Natoma would give me a gun to carry if I wanted to go to the store at the corner.
But back to SalesForce and Twitters tax breaks for all their empty buildings, they should PAY some back - not use this fake 'incentive' - unless they donate the $10 in YOUR name so its YOUR tax write off?
EDIT: It does look like the donations are in the employees behalf - but it only says that for remote workers who attend an event - and it also says how much it hopes to raise via this initiative for non-remotes -- so the company is slurping a tax break off just having employees in office.

"Securing a tax deduction" makes it sound like they benefit from the donation itself.
It costs them ten dollars minus the taxes for ten dollars. So it costs them seven dollars. (Assuming I got the right tax rates when searching.)

Nice call on the tax deduction part too btw! Benioff was a big proponent of taxing big business in here SF a while back
If they gave the staff the tax deduction, I could believe it's mutual benefit.
