One of my favorite pieces of advice from shape up is using low fidelity mocks. We tend to overvalue visual work, so we love pretty high fidelity mocks, but when you're hammering out the details of UX and iterating that is just the flat out wrong way to do it. You don't iterate on house design by building the house, finding a mistake, tearing it down, and starting over. You iterate on house design on paper, where it's cheap and free and infinitely easier to change.

There still IS a time and place for high fidelity mocks, and they should of course be very well done. It's just that designing new functionality (key word functional) isn't that place.

I can't speak more highly of Ryan Singer's work on Shape Up. It has transformed how we approach work by inverting the question from "how long something is going to take" to "how long do we want to spend on this".
