Every time I see OS/2 it seems like this bizarro timeline that I have difficulty reconciling with my experience at the time. It’s such at first familiar Windows 3.1 but upon closer inspection things are slightly different.

I even worked at Suncoast Video (subsidiary of the Musicland Group) whose POS ran OS/2 (though the main employee interface was TUI).

The OS/2 2.0+ desktop was completely different from Windows 3, despite superficial similarities.

It used an object model (SOM) that was more consistent and extensible than anything Microsoft shipped for a long time.

When I first got an internet dial-up connection in Slovenia with Siol, there was an instruction manual included in the welcome package of how to set it up in OS/2. That's the only time I ever saw a screenshot of that system. I don't know if it was in English or Slovenian.

This was a great operating system. Started my CompuServe (GO MAXIS) and Internet journey on it.

I worked at IBM for a while in the 90's and I vaguely remember an email chain going around asking for interested parties to comment on the idea of open sourcing parts of OS/2. I responded enthusiastically, but I think the only thing that made it out was the JFS file system.

I always that the JFS code in Linux came from AIX but it does seem to have come from OS/2
