Apple already figured out that what the author is trying to do has absolutely no merit, none whatsoever. So the author finds it wasteful losing 100mAh by wiping his screen, so he'd rather contemplate how to split the atom in order to placate OCD. I think this says a lot about our modern society of educated intellectuals and technical minds. Would be pretty great if no one ever wasted their time like this and instead were able to find worthy challenges that might actually make a difference in people's lives, iow that it would benefit them rather than distract them and themselves with absolute nonsense.
On a similar note I've been looking for a way to put mine to sleep when I close the lid with an external monitor attached. Windows seems to have a lot more options in this area unless I'm missing something
There isn't a built in way. That's not what Apple wants to happen so fuck the user I guess. Someone has written a script that monitors for if the lid is closed and puts it to sleep. I haven't personally tried it though.

Can’t you open the system menu and choose ‘Sleep’?
For myself, I understand the desire to have the screen off and the keyboard locked while cleaning the screen. You can easily achieve this with screensaver settings. No problem, so far as I’m concerned.
What I am more interested in is running my 13” M1 MacBook Pro in clamshell mode while attached to external monitors. If I can still do that, then I will be a happy camper.

Only tangentially related: It is super delighting how quickly the M1 laptops wake up. I’d gotten so used to several seconds of waiting for my previous MacBooks to be usable again after opening the lid, but it’s always immediate on the M1.

It does this? So you're saying if I shut off my 16" MacBook Pro close the lid, and open it, it'll boot?

I don't understand this. Why does it matter if it's on while you clean the screen/kb. Did this all the time when I used a Mac, just don't login

It's a lot easier to see streaks / material stuck to the screen with the screen off.

Just don’t close it if it’s shut down
Wow this seems like a really basic thing to be able to configure. I’m not a Mac person - is this a new limitation with the new chips only?
