I've been a Mailplane customer for close to 10 years now, and this is a distressing development. Having Gmail run in its own app that users can easily Cmd+Tab to is a no-brainer. I actually don't understand how people run it in a browser as a tab. It's not a tab, it's an app!

Worse, Google hasn't even built a native Progressive Web App for Gmail. If you're going to hinder apps like Mailplane, at least release a native PWA! Go figure.

More recently, I've experimented with the new Mimestream client. It uses the Gmail API, as opposed to being a browser wrapper, and closely mimics the UI of Apple Mail. It's incredible, and I think my new long-term solution to a Gmail-friendly client on macOS.

Mimestream is a fully native Mac app that plays so nicely with Gmail -- it puts Apple Mail to shame in this regard. In fact, the developer was a former Apple Mail engineer who seemingly got fed up with his team's approach to Gmail support!
