A lot could have happened in the 22 years since I worked for subway... but that was exactly how we made it. One very large cans of tuna and like half a gallon of mayonnaise.
so, Subway doesn't contribute to depletion of tuna? But somehow they are not being applauded in this article.
IIRC back in 2013 when the horse meat scandal was bubbling in the news and DNA testing meat was all the rage, I read a headline that Subway chicken meat was aledgedly found out to only be one third chicken, the rest being soy. My initial though back then was pretty much the same.
Sadly, I can't find the "one third" claims any more, closest I can find right now are several "less then 50%" articles with addenda from around 2017[1][2][3].

Tuna aren't a single species, most of them are not endangered. The one you would usually use in sandwiches or salads for example is the albacore or skipjack tuna which is not endangered. Bluefin is critically endangered.

True, it could be summed up in one sentence, but it's not insubstantial. Subway has a history of... blunders, so to say, so it makes sense to watch them more closely - even though I really doubt this particular case is true.
I wonder if their “tuna” could be vegan in that case
Sardines, herring and mackerel are better for you anyways. It'll be hundreds of years before Subway sells a sardine sandwich.
That's an unusually strong statement for them to make if it's untrue, there's not much wiggle-room there.
