This seems like it's implicitly painting a false dichotomy between an implied autonomous Spez that is causing damage and a subservient Spez that is just a name attached to board action. How about this, if Spez is being asked to do stupid things by the board, he's failing extraordinarily to even cushion them with PR, which is the actual least he can do.
I built this and the other rocm packages from AUR (some removed now) along with pytorch build-flagged for rocm. It did eventually work, but It was a real pain in the ass and cost a whole lot of time. After that though, something broke (who knows) and I ended up rebuilding everything again just to get it back to a working state. I'm currently too afraid to update to these community packages, partially because I don't know if the build flags I used are the duct tape keeping my builds functional (I have an rx590-8gb which is maybe at the edge of supported gpus). Instead, I just added every rocm package to my IgnorePkgs, which isn't a great sign.
I really did loath the removal of SMS. It went like this for me: I would set up non-techie family with signal and that would be SMS and secure messaging for them. Then Signal removed SMS, so I had to explain to them that I had actually set them up with something "unstable" and needed to change their apps around. As a consequence, they're more hesitant to try things I suggest and I can't blame them. As for the actual messaging, inevitably they'll forget to juggle apps and just default to SMS and there's only so much I can go against the stream here.
This is cool, but I think being the default in the mainline app is critical. Also, iirc signal doesn't like modified apps, so this might be on shaky ground.

At first, I was a little put off by how "batteries not included" the standard library was in rust, but I ended up preferring it. The quality of the rust community has generally made library selection pretty easy. There's usually a tacit first choice and often one or more optimized alternative for a particular situation or preference. When there is community disagreement and library churn, I think it ends up evolving better, more liked solutions; I truly believe this wouldn't happen as easily if it was enshrined in the std. Case and point, I've seen standard library implementations in C++ and python that just rot away.
The case sensitive visibility/privacy sound terrible to me. I dislike having to type pub as much as I do, but that seems worse for readability and clarity on top of throwing a wrench into the established rustfmt naming system.
About "Memory management", they already made some progress with non-lexical lifetimes in the past which did indeed improve the end user experience. I think "Polonius" aims to reduce the friction further, but I haven't looked into the specific improvements it might bring in user experience.
Yeah, wgpu isn't updated for the new attributes yet apparently. I looked it up and it was just changed in the 2022-01-19 revision. Definitely a "working draft" as stated.
Wow, WGSL looks different from the last time I checked it out (not too long ago iirc). I've been playing around with wgpu and vulkan, but I disliked the wgsl syntax so much that I didn't bother pursuing it any further at the time. I'm actually going to give it another look now since I don't really like glsl syntax much at all either.
Comcast, not AT&T, but my mom recently discovered that her Turner Classic Movie channel was not longer activated. After talking to someone on the phone (who suggested a service technician visit), she independently discovered that TCM was being moved to a sports package along with a military history channel and a country music channel.
It was a watershed moment for her. Apparently, there are online services that provide TCM, and now she's considering downgrading her cable service rather than upgrade it and getting an online service to make up the difference.
I actually set this up just the other day for my Windows 10 VM. To be clear, the idea here is to run a Windows VM (with near native performance by passing it a hardward graphicical device), then take the output directly from the VM graphics card's memory and feed that to a Linux host where it can display that output natively.
The primary demographic seems to be gamers that want to ditch Windows for Linux, but don't want compromise on performance. I can attest to the performance angle, but it has a number of rough edges.
This project seeks to solve input and output management. For example, I've been used a second monitor and a hardware USB switch, which is attached to my keyboard and mouse, for interacting with my VM. Looking glass actually performs excellently for input capturing for me, but I'm finding the video output just a touch too slow and find myself just switching my monitor input instead. I'm thinking that might have more to do with my using Intel integrated graphics on my host though, but I'm not sure. I'm pretty excited to see where this goes nonetheless.
Not so much a question, but I wanted to thank you for the project. It's hit a sweet spot of configurability, stability, and performance for me, all without the baggage or caveats alternatives have. It's been my terminal of choice for a while now. Keep up the good work.
Jessica price has a history of saying pretty offensive stuff (e.g., and in particular, a mean spirited comment about a youtubers death [0]), but she wasn't ever fired for those. I think she was fired this time because she was on social media talking specifically about work, then going on to insult Guild Wars fans and beyond that, multiple 'partners'[1]. Derior in particular has a named NPC in-game [2].
To give some more context in general, this takes place right after an AMA on the guildwars2 subreddit [3] -- which she starts her twitter thread by referencing -- where she was acting in an official capacity as a GW2 developer. She later goes on to say she doesn't have to pretend to like people in the context of twitter [4], which I took to mean as in contrast to the AMA.
And in case there is any question about if the streamer was coming from a negative place and that she was at least right about his intentions, he was praising her in particular on a stream just before the exchange [5]. It's almost tragic. He probably only engaged with her because he thought so much of her.
All this said, I think it more sad than anything. Jessica actually gave some pretty great answers in the AMA, and I was impressed just like Deroir. I was very surprised to see this rash behavior right after her measure responses. And to also lose Peter Fries, who has been with the franchise since either the beginning or very near it, is disheartening.
Also, I think the article is avoiding posting Derior's entire original comment since he ends it very politely. You might want to check all 4 tweets yourself [6], or even the entire thread. Keep in mind that Jessica Price goes on to make other tweets outside the thread though. I guess it's also worth mentioning that the reddit comment referenced in the article had negative karma and was deleted [7].
He is having an existential crisis about finding self worth while working in an entertainment industry. He then blames everyone else for not having the exact same values as him.
That's why I put it in quotes. It's pretty clear the original intent was to push people to get Quattro cards for using in VMs. My impression is that they gave up on the idea for normal users and are trying to play it off while suggesting they aren't going to fuck with people any further.
This will be considered suboptimal by some, I'm sure, but the solution I went with is to reserve the dedicated GPU for the VM and use Intel integrated for Linux, in my case from a skylake i5-6600. Aside from that, you can get a cheap, low power second GPU (if you're using an AMD CPU for example). This is fine for me since I'm gaming on the VM, and not really doing much graphically intensive on Linux.
The idea of getting another high end card seems pretty absurd when you're putting windows in a VM specifically to deal with those situations. I recognize some people have special use cases, but they're just that, special use cases.
Really, overall, I don't consider it to be too bad of a trade off for what you get.
I was pretty apprehensive about the concept, but hopeful enough to get a new mobo/CPU just to give it a shot. It does definitely seem to good to be true.
I went for it, and it actually ended being significantly easier and better performing than I expected. I did have to take a few days and learn a bit about qemu, but I'd expect that much.
I will say that older motherboard (perhaps some new ones too) might not have firmware that fully support what's being done here. It's hard to say which, but you can see what people have had success with if you search around (Asus z170a works for me).
