I just want to thank you for sharing your politics views. These are the same ideas and views, as an American, that I’m struggling with. It helps so much to know other people in other parts of the world are going through the same thing and have the same thoughts and ideas.
Just a thought, but could they be worried about privacy features of the iPhone? Whistle blowers, dissidents, etc., would benefit from iOS Security relative to Android. Then again, I don’t know the export laws of China, for all I know, they require weak security to sell the iPhone in China.

I think you're missing the point of the comment you're replying to, and of the story as a whole.
Yes, human beings have agency and are ultimately responsible and accountable for their decisions.
Human beings, like all living organisms, are complex systems. Social media, marketers and advertisers, among others, regularly manipulate and abuse such systems.
So, yes, while it is true that addiction is a spectrum, that spectrum applies to social media as much as it does with other addictions like sugar or amphetamines.
What your argument does is absolve those attempting to abuse such organic, complex systems for their own gain, regardless of the harm it promotes or directly causes.
How about both groups suffer far more than they should in any civilized, modern society. It’s not a contest which group is screwed over the most, let’s instead focus on why/how/what and solve.

X is the client and server for rendering pixels on to a screen, which is mapped to one of more monitors. It provides the most basic, bare bones way to draw a window to the screen, and that’s about it.
It’s not even a GNU/Linux thing, X predates Linux, it’s more of the standard system to draw a window on Unix-like systems.
X11 apps are GUI apps uncontrolled by/unaware of a desktop environment, theme engine, or window manager. They appear in a minimalist, maybe even brutalist, aesthetic. You can launch a single X11 app from the console, and the resulting window will be your entire graphical display/instance, returning you to the console after the program terminates execution.
Maybe another way to think about your question might be, think of X vs Wayland.
You summed it up nicely. I followed a lot of tech stuff, and sci-fi, etc, stuff it’s hard to find on traditional social media. Following a tech Instagram will never be like seeing Netflix’s engineers posting to r/Kubernetes for an outage in the middle of the night.
And even if I wanted to keep using Reddit, a lot of brain drain has already happened, so it’s so much less useful already, and it really feels like one of my favorite tools is suddenly obsolete.
